But definately sounds like a bad CPS. Only $35 at the dealership, I'd just put a new one in and then you can keep the other as a spare. It's a good part to have on hand.
Also I was going to get a cps through a local shop that gets them through an international dealer. The price they told me was $110 their cost, and the local ford dealer was $42. A little surprising, seems like everyone here says the international ones would be cheaper.
You might also want to replace the VSS in the rear diff. At the very least, pull it and wipe it off. DO NOT USE ANY CLEANER ON THE VSS. Sometimes the metal particle buildup on the VSS can interfere with the signal.
You might even want to replace the VSS and keep a spare on hand. They're about $25 at the dealer.
