I am on my 3rd CPS in 2 weeks and I can't count on my truck to not break down on me. The truck dies and then I let it cool down and it starts back up. It is at the shop right now to get dianosed, but if it isn't the CPS then what could it be?
I was driving in town and at a red light, it started to hiccup and then as soon as I got through the intersection it died. Let it rest and it fires back up, but for how long I don't know. This seems to be an intermitent thing and is driving me crazy.
What else can be wrong? I need my truck as we are getting ready to go on vacation soon and will be towing my travel trailer in the mountains and can't have it break down.
Her are the things that have been done w/in the last year:
fuel pump, glow plugs, fuel hoses, GPR. CPS last year. CPS 2 weeks ago(NAPA one went bad in a few miles). CPS from Ford(to replace the NAPA one). Fuel filter, 4k ago, air filter(gonna do the 6637 soon) Trans service last June.
A number of possibilities. That many CPS's tells me that ain't the problem. The IPR is a common problem when the engine gets hot. There is a nut on the backside of them that can loosen up, and there are O-rings inside the IPR that can go bad. What happens as the truck warms up and the oil thins out, it will seep past the O-rings, causing it to idle rough and die. It will however, usually start right back up.
Other possibilities are that a relay is getting hot and shutting down. When it shuts down, does the WTS light come on or the SES light? How about after you turn the ignition off and back on?
How recent did you change the Glow Plug Relay, or do you mean the glow plug selenoid?
I found out the problem(hopefully), it was the aftermaket chip the previous owner installed many yrs ago. Only time will tell if that was what it is. I sure hope so. I will drive for a few weeks and then decide if a new chip is needed. If I want a new chip what's the best one out there for a 95 PSD?
Should you decide to go with a chip, do not go with an off-the-shelf type. Folks on here like DP Tuner, Tony Wildman, and Power Hungary Performance. Any of these 3 will treat you well. What each of them will do is make a chip specifically for your truck, using the information you give them as in what mods have been done to the truck. Are you planning any more? What are your driving habits? Do you tow? Do you have gauges? Do you want something to play with like a race tune or a smoke tune? All good and important information when going with a chip. Any of them will do you right!
