I have been thinking of adding 3 gauges to my a pillar. I am thinking trans temp, boost, and egt's. Can you guys recommend a quality set of gauges that are reliable and will not break the bank to much. Is the install relatively simple or very involved. If I recall, I will need to weld a nut on the down pipe to accept the pyro, is that correct? How does the boost and trans temp mate to the truck? Any help would be appreciated.
The EGT should go in the exhaust manifold. I drilled mine without taking off the manifold as many have. I'm sure you can search all the info you need. My 2nd EGT was right after the turbo no nut needed, I just drilled the hole and used the clamp which came from the unit. An angle drill attachment from Harbor Frieght made it esey. Both mine feed a Bully Dog monitor which I use to read boost and voltage. Good Luck
Boost I drilled and tapped the intake elbow and ran the line to the back of the gauge. An aftermarket elbow will usually have the port there for you to just thread in the fitting. The trans temp installs into the test port on the drivers side of the trans and 2 wires to the gauge. A quality kit should include instructions. EGT pre-turbo is more accurate, post turbo I think you need to add like 200 deg IIRC.
I like my autometer gauges. Like posted, it needs to go in the manifold, not the downpipe. I dont like the idea of drilling it on the truck, its soooo simple to pull the manifold off why risk it? can be off in 15 minutes ready to drill. 15 minutes labor is cheap insurance compared to metal making its way to the turbo. Thats just my opinion. Many people drill them on the truck too.
Can someone post a pic of the pyro installed on the manifold. What does a set of autometer gauges and the A-pillar pod go for?
I'm sure someone will post you a picture of a pyro - but it's really simple, it goes to the bottom side of the driver side exhaust manifold, behind the exhaust necks from the head....
I bought my gauges from Summit Racing, it wasn't a set, I picked what I wanted to have. The price was good, shipping was fast, and they still work fine. The reason I got it from there, because I like the flexibility to choose whatever I want, and they have a great selection of gauges.
look into isspro too I really like them. Talk to clay at riff raff diesel. He is one of the sponsers on here he dose really good deals I will try to get a pic up on my egt install but it will probably be tommrow before I can
I too just bought the individial gauges from summit and an autometer pillar pod. It was in the $250ish neighborhood. I use the silver ultralite gauges (mainly because my truck is silver so it matches)
http://www.truckblog.com/story-1312-...n_project_jakd Heres one I saved to my favorites, everything you need to know is in here. Thanks goes out to Bearhunter, who I don't see around here much anymore. I actually bought the fitting he shows for the boost in the intake elbow, worked very well! HTH- Tim
I think I would choose a fuel press. gauge over the tranny temp.
..... that's exactly what I did. Since I don't tow with my truck, I felt that monitoring the fuel pressure is way more important for me. ... and I believe I'd feel the same way even if I'm towing, but probably would install more gauges...
