Has anyone replaced the power socket on an HP laptop...where the power cord plugs in...
I heard they are available online and was wondering how much of a job it was to replace it.
I know I tried to take the case apart on my gateway and had one helluva time.
They are available online and yes they are a pain in the rear to replace..
The whole laptop needs to be disassembled and then the old jack needs to be removed without damaging the motherboard.. Then the new jack installed and soldered in..
Note: They use solder that needs a higher watt soldering iron to get it to melt.. A regular soldering iron won't cut it..
Most places charge around $150.00 to replace it..
I would just put that money into a new desktop system and you will be ahead of the game..
Laptop cases can be a real pain to take apart. I use to work in tech support and had to strip out a couple of old Dell laptops and they were a major pain. I'm not sure about HPs, but the Dell power sockets were soldered directly to the motherboard. That would take quite a bit of work to replace.
SierraB,
Are you running any HP printer/scanners? Your problem sounds like the "HPqta08.(execute)" situation where all memory is taken up by this backround program. Look at all the little icons along the bottom right hand side of the screen. If you are lucky, there will be a small, green, 'lollipop' lookin icon with an HP designation when you hover the cursor on it. If so, right click and turn off the icon. Periodically, this restarts itself when you use the scanner/printer or other image devices and you have to repeat the process. You can google this problem for many more details.

Attach a female socket to the motherboard with a pigtail style cord. You can solder it to the leads of the original socket. This allows the socket to move with the power cord and prevents the recurrence of the original problem. Which hp model do you have? Maintenance manuals are available online that have dis-assembly instructions.
