Question Wierd computer question

Several times I have been either posting a new thread or responding to an existing thread and before I am finished, a rectangular box pops up with a single button entitled: "close". I can't get anything else to respond, and when I click on the button I get booted out of the forum and back to my Windows desktop display. Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

I have a HP Pavilion with ME 2000 on it and I am using Internet Explorer and Norton Internet Security 2004 with an Adelphia high speed cable connection.
TIA, Brady

Your computer is having problems and the browser is shutting down. Sounds like an old computer, might be time for an upgrade. Norton Internet security has been known to cause many problems if it is not set up properly.

Is this the only site that you are having problems with or does this happen at other times? Try downloading Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware and run full scans on your computer (in addition to a full virus scan). Also, you may want to switch to Firefox for your browser.

Al;so download the new Microsoft Anti-Spy beta.....it finds stuff the others don't and will alert you if some program is trying to modify your registry.
Don't mean to sound rude but you would be better off upgrading to XP.

Oh yeah....Firefox is the way to browse!

Wierd computer question Reply to Thread

Thanks for the replies. It's not a big problem, but I was just curious as to what was causing it. It (almost) always happens when I am responding to a thread or typing a new thread and either I am taking a lot of time composing or just typing a lot. Most of the other times if I encounter a problem, I get a message such as:

program not responding
server is busy, try again later
there has been an error in_________

Has no one else experienced this same problem? Brady

Welll...I've beeen getting a lot of 'server is busy" on this site. IS this problem of yours happening only on FTE or elsewhere? If just on FTE, it could be windows ME getting confused about which alert window to put up.

I used to teach MS Access Db , and when they introduced Access 2000 (prev Access 97) I had a couple of occurrences where blank dialog boxes would pop up during class exercises...in other words, MS doesn't provide bug free software...like that's a surprise!

Sometimes computers do things to show us that they are more intelligent than we are. Other times they do it for spite.

Thanks again for the response.

I had wondered if it was some sort of timer, timing out. What kind of timer are you talking about? I was continually typing online. Is there a max time for typing in a response? At first, I thought there might be some sort of max number of lines, but sometimes I was cutting and pasting a relatively short number of lines when it happened.

could be your firewall, I have to turn mine off to post on FTE. had norton once before and had problems on other forms but not here. useing zonealarm now but still have to turn it off to post. I think it blocks certin cookies from recognizing who you are before it will let you post... or something of that nature. try it once without your firewall and see if that fixes it, if it doesnt turn it back on asap.

my computer is running windows 98 and I use firefox 0.8 and still have to do this.

as far as connection timing out... that would be your isp.

I'm running ZA with W98 and I don't have that problem. You might want to go back into ZA and recheck your settings. Something might be set too high. Look in the "Firewall" "Main" "advanced" and see if it not allowing outgoing.
