Timing: 6.9l IH Diesel
Hey guys I just joined FTE I am also a member over on OB's but I thought I might like it here since this is strictly Ford, I was wondering I am having serious problems starting my truck I have the 84 Ford F250 with the 6.9 IH Diesel, I was wondering (I am still somewhat new to diesel engies) how do you time the Injector Pump?
thanks

To time the injector pump you need special equipment that is hard to get. Ford used a timing light that had a special piezo pickup that sensed the fuel pulse on the #1 injector. One other company used a sensor that picked up the flame when the cylinder fired(I think through the glowplug hole).
Most people time it by ear. There is a wire going to the injection pump that advances the timing when the engine is cold. When this wire has 12v on it, and the timing is correct, it makes the engine "rattle". If your engine rattles all the time, the timing is too advanced. It the engine will not rattle when you put 12v on the advance wire, the timing is too retarded. If it rattles with 12v on the wire, and the rattle goes away when you take 12v off the wire, then the timing is about right.
What makes you think the timing is off? The most common problem with these trucks are fuel leaks in the system, which let the fuel drain back to the tank, and fill the lines with air.

well it just don't start under it's own power, the only time I got this engine to fire was when I put a gas rag on the breather.. than it ran until I pulled the rag off, then it stalled, and when I give it a small spritz of ether in the breather it will clunk once or twice due to preignition

So you are not getting any fuel to the engine? If you are getting fuel, when it's cranking you should get smelly white smoke out of the tailpipe.
Sounds like you are adding fuel manually and it's trying to run. I would go over to the fuel filter and find the shrader valve(looks like a tire valve) and push on it. Fuel should squirt out. If it doesn't, take the shrader valve completly out, and then crank the engine and see if fuel squirts out of the hole were the valve was.
I have a 7.3, and my shrader valve is near the filter on the front passenger side. You have a older 6.9, so yours might be in a different location.
