What probably happened is that the original trans was replaced shortly after the truck was built.

That doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy about my '00 F250 PSD / 4R100...

Well, look on the bright side. The one that's in there now is sure to be a better one than the one that originally was installed.

The deed is done. I have added a low mileage 2001 7.3 to the family fleet. From what I read in this thread, I have the dreaded mechanical diode by a day or two till they fixed it. Any chance I don't have it? And if I do, is a powertrain warranty a conservative bet for me (especially, since I know the previous owner towed something heavy)?

If it makes anyone here feel better, I've got a "mechanical diode" 4R100 in my '01 and I have 126K worth of heavy (a lot of times 20k lbs.) towing on it.

No problems.......

Cody, Good to know that you haven't had any problems. Do you or others think that chipping away from the stock PCM settings, which changes the shift points (and other things) would be asking for trouble? My 00's mpg and performance off the line increased with the perf. tow setting and the superchip will work on my nearly identical (except for the mechanical diode) 01.

I need to get under my truck this evening to see what my trans date is. My build date is 8-19-'00, so I might be lucky and not have the diode. Ususlly not to lucky.lol.

I have pulled a lot of heavy loads with my truck, and I have some power mods to make it stronger and faster. It is still going strong at this point, even with the Diode in it. Don't worry about it till the time comes.

Just be careful with the SC. I understand they aren't the most trans-friendly tunes out there. Now there are few guys running aftermarket injectors on trucks with the mech diode trans, up to around 400 rwhp and still going strong, but they have custom tuning, not off-the-shelf stuff.

Just looked at mine and the code is BD-1E06, guess I got lucky by 2 months. Does anyone know what the Banks tranny minder ( I think it's called) does? It came as part of the Banks Stinger kit I installed and is supposed to beef up the shifting by sensing demand and increasing fluid pressures. I've been running with it for about 8 years with no problems, just wondering what the general opinion out there is?

Rick you have it according to Mark's previous post with the dates. And according to those dates, mine may or may not have the diode because it was built in March 01.

Well...after reading this thread I finally looked at the code on my tranny and it definitely had the mechanical diode, since it was built in august of 2000. Buy my tranny was rebuilt at 60,000 miles by ford, so hopefully they put a non mechanical diode in it.

Was Mark talking about the build date of the truck or trans? I posted my truck build date.

I was talking about the trans build date. In 2001, though, they usually were the same.

I was at the Sharonville, OH, transmission plant in 2001. It's about 90 miles from the Kentucky Truck plant where they build Superdutys. The trans plant quality manager told me that the limit on building Superdutys at that time was how many automatic transmissions they could build. As soon as the truck was filled with transmissions it left for the truck plant. The transmissions that were the last to go on the truck were still warm from the final test when they were bolted to engines. Minutes after the trans is bolted to the engine it gets installed in a truck. So about three hours after the trans is built it's driven off the end of the assembly line.

Thanks Mark, I guess I will stick to saying I have the diode in my trans. . But it is holding out very well with the mods I have, and even racing it on the track.
