Hey everybody, I recently noticed that when my truck is running the degas bottle is almost empty, and when I shut it off it fills back up. Is this normal?
I have been noticing fluctuations in my degass bottle level. I made sure that it was at minimum when cold and de-pressured.
It fluctuates by an inch above minimum to 1/2 to 3/4 inches below minimum. I have no puking going on. I have talked to several techs about it and was told that it is due to the fact that the degas bottle is not an overflow bottle - it is part of the pressurized system. The coolant expands slightly under heat. Since liquids are non-compressible, the level will begin to rise and the pressure will build. Then the rubber components (hoses) will begin to stretch and the level will drop.
I have been assured that this is normal. Just keep a close eye and make sure you are not actually losing coolant.
Thanks for the quick reply. I have been keeping a very close eye on it since I put headstuds in it about a month or so ago and it hasn't lost a drop. I also put a bottle of Ford coolant additive in it since I noticed it being empty,"it's all the way down to the sump on the bottom of the bottle". I do keep it at the min line, when i shut it off it comes up over it about 1/2" or so and goes to normal ( min ) when it cools down. I don't know, it just seems like a big fluctuation. Thanks again for your time.

Mine does it. Also I think the level drop a bit more when you use the heater. When you use the heater and the valve on the heater hose open it fill the heater core and complete the circuit for the heater.
Also when you look at the bottle you have to make sure the truck is on a100% level ground. Sometimes I have seen the level on the bottle, do nothing and checked again at other location then checked again on the first spot and the difference are huge. I try to check the level always on the same spot to aviod this.
Same here, at MIN when cold, around 1/2" below when running/hot. I do not have any operational problems, but to be cautious the Dealer has checked the system inside and out, also no issues found.
My truck used coolant, had to refill every month or so.. Never found any leak, then one day the EGR finally failed (blew clouds of white smoke out the tail pipe).. Since I had the truck mostly ripped apart I went ahead and did the ARP studs.. Hasn't lost a drop since..
