Mark, all you need to do is tack weld it in a few spots, not completely weld it shut. Hope that helps.

Bismic, I tack welded mine in a few spots, and no warping went right back in no problem.
(Mig welder)

I used epoxy that I glue golf shafts with. It takes a heat gun or torch to soften it after it hardens. With the EGR valve epoxyed shut, no exhaust gas flowing and the cooler working OK, there should be no issue with it breaking down. JB Weld should work fine.
