I mentioned glow plugs at work and how the majority of people choose to use the Motorcraft plugs over the autolites or bosch plugs due to the tip swelling. One guy said Autolite is made by Motorcraft so there shouldn't be any difference. Any thoughts? I should have checked the autolite plugs to see if they had the Beru stamp like the motorcraft plugs did.
what the guy said holds true for some parts, but when it comes to glowplugs Josh is correct, only use Motorcraft/Beru as Autolites are totally different and also have a very high failure rate.
you would think with the demand for something that didnt swell or burn out they would make something decent. i am beginning to wonder if the glowplugs are an industry money maker, well i just finished wondering, Yep they are!!!
It's everywhere, wreckinball. Around here, one has to go to the Ford dealership and they want $22 apeice. Thanks, but no thanks- I'll get em online for ten bucks.
Take a look at some of the new boxes of Autolite Sparkplugs and Glow Plugs they are now made in a new place!!! The boxes are printed with "Made in China to Honeywell Specificatiions! So go check out some off the new boxes of Autolites and you will see!
In the early 1960's Ford bought out Electric Autolite which manufactured spark plugs and batteries.
An anti trust lawsuit was filed almost imediately.
After many years of court proceedings, Ford was forced to sell Autolite.
Back in the 60's, Autolite parts all had Ford part numbers and the Autolite name on the boxes and were sold at Ford dealerships.
Mostly spark plugs, points and condensors in the engine parts department and Autolite batteries were all Autolite had to offer.
Today, parts are in Motorcraft boxes.
To long ago, I can't remember any more details.
Well an internet search turned up Bendix as the purchasing company in 1974.
So they were Bendix Autolite from 1974 thru 1984 when Bendix became part of Allied, Bendix -Allied.
In 1985 Allied became Allied Signal.
Electric Autolite was in business from 1936 to 1961 when Ford bought the company.
Spark plugs were manufactured in Fostoria, Ohio.
The Motorcraft name on Ford replacement parts was originally started iin the 1950's, but it never caught on.
In 1972 when Ford was forced to sell Autolite, the name was reserected and was used on all Ford replacement parts.
Today Motorcraft is owned by Honeywell.
These Motorcraft products must meet quality standards set by the Ford Motor Company in order to be considered for retail sale.
I grew up about 1/2 hour from fostoria. I remember my grandpa talking about working at autolite. Honeywell and allied signal was still there when I moved to Kentucky, the flag football league I played in used a field right next to it.
