2 differentials, which to use?
I will be using the 3000-mile gear set out of my pickup--same ratio. I will probably also use the center section from the pickup so I don't have to go through setting pinion depth. I will just have to set backlash. I will also have to get a new crush sleeve because the 79 Broncos have a larger yoke. No big deal. The truck is a 28 spline open ,and the Bronco is a 31 spline Trac-Lok.
One choice I have is to rebuild the stock Trac-Lok and put into the center section from the truck. I already have the clutches for it. The other option is to use the new Detroit TrueTrac I have sitting on the shelf.
The TrueTrac is supposed to be for my 68 Mustang, which is far from needing it, as I am currently restoring it.
Now, my question is which diff to use in which vehicle? The Bronco is a daily-driver, fixer-upper. Basically stock now, and will be getting a 4" lift and 33s. It should remain a daily driver with some trails here and there. Nothing extreme. I'm not in competition with anyone for off-roading, but I still want the basic functionality of the 4" lift and 33s (maybe 35s when these need to be replaced).
The Mustang will be a 350-400hp weekend thrasher with the occasional mini road trip with 4.10s and a Tremec 3550. Everything is already there, but torn apart for resto. I bought the TrueTrac for the Mustang because I couldn't beat the price.
My assumptions are that the TracLok is more aggressive, but the TrueTrac is more durable and tougher. I can see reasons for either diff in either vehicle.
