Mustangs, T-Birds and Rangers get the 28 spline Trac-Lok. They do not interchange with the 31.
The difference between a Trac-Lok and an open is obvious if you have to two side by side, I'm just not sure how to describe it. The spider gearset in an open rear is much more exposed than the Trac-Lok version and IIRC, the Trac-Lok's clutch packs are visible through recesses cut into the ends of the openings to provide anti-rotation locators for the discs. I've got an open carrier lying around the garage somewhere, I'll find it tonight and post what info I can.
I know it's a Trak Loc. It's identical to the one I pulled out of my drag car, except it's 31 spline. I really need to know what model car it's for, if it even matters. I mean if it's made for a pickup, will it fit in the 8.8 of my drag car (Mustang)if I change my axles to 31 spline too? Will a Mustang and Pickup Trac Lok interchange ie: physically swap between housings and match in all regards except for the differences in the number of splines. Thanks for all the help,
The 8.8 31 spline trac lok will fit any 8.8 with 31 splines, so it will fit in a truck. Now, it will fit in a mustang if you change the axles to 31 spline, I believe. Post in the axle forum and you'll find a better answer.

Thats it for now, saving for a stang. Check out my Gallery for a look-see.
Sorry, I thought you were trying to identify the type of carrier.
It's not just the guts of the carrier. The 31 spline axles are larger in diameter than the 28 spline and take an outboard bearing that is larger both OD and ID than that used on the the 28. I'm pretty sure the axle tube is larger on the 31 as well. All of which means that 31 spline innards won't fit a 28 spline housing.
