Well now that I am nearing the end of finishing my truck (finish interior, paint exterior) the idea of an engine swap has gotten stuck in my head. My current setup is a 6.6 mated to a C6 in my 77 F150. The C6 is going to stay. Period. My idea is to buy a newly reman 460, throw in a hot cam, get some headwork and such done and throw it in. I probably wouldn't be doing this till the end of this year or start of summer so I'm just playing with the idea. What does everyone think? I took a look at crate engines, but those all have more than what I want. I figured a 460 with a hot cam will be enough to rocket my F150 pretty nicely. Any other engine ideas?
Don't know how much is too much to spend but I like the first and third ones on this link. Go ahead and go with the 385 series since you're already thinking about it and have the correct transmission for the swap, you won't be sorry.
I don't have $14,500. If I do go with an engine from him it would have to be the Old Pro because that one can run on regular unleaded. I want this to be a daily driver, so the idea of filling up with premium gas every time is none to appealing. I was thinkin, what would it be like to get a reman 460, throw in a cam, and put a nice carb on and call it good for awhile. Wait a year, save like $2,000 then buy a 557 stroker kit. But keep the compression down to like 9? How well would that work to have such a long stroke but only 9-1 compression?
I have been thinking about all this engine swap stuff. If top power is the idea, go with the 460.
I still like the '90s 351w EFI. Nice power, nice gas mileage, very abundant, not really anything special, but it's what I think I'm going to swap in after my 302 poops the bed.
Here's a list from Eddies Performance of how they can usually build each block:
a Ford 289 Engine - Up To 350 hp
a Ford 302 Engine - Up To 450 hp
a Ford 351W Engine - Up To 550 hp
a Ford 351C Engine - Up To 600 hp
a Ford 429 Engine - Up To 650 hp
a Ford 460 Engine - Up To 700 hp
if you're going to put a hotter cam in, get a new intake and headers. or else you wont be seeing much improvement. And there's nothing wrong with 9:1 with a long stroke. and there's really not many people that would actually use 557ci. you can make plenty of power without having to have mega cubes.

I plan on doing intake and headers of course. And I really just want to do the 557 stroker just for the pure fact when people as what engine it has I can smugly say, "O, just a little old 557."
A 557 is a big a$$ motor for a daily driver. Don't get me wrong the more cubes the better but a big cubed daily driver will cost you a fortune in gas no matter if it is 9 to 1 or a little higher. It's all up to you so have fun with it.

I have a 521 and I get about 5 MPG. Of course that is with Ethanol, but even with gas, you won't get much.
