How hot will a set of steel Hedman headers get with this set up? I have a set that I have not yet installed as I want to get them ceramic coated first.
There is one coating that is a satin black that will withstand temperatures up to 2000 degrees and the cermachrome (looks like a polished aluminum finish) will accept temperatures up to 1350 before the finish starts to dull and at 1500 degrees the coating will come off. I really want to go with the cermachrome, but I am not sure if the headers will get too hot for this or if those temperatures are going to be well above what I can expect.
I've seen 'em glow red on a dyno but it really depends on the amount of time at a sustained RPM. With a 460 and "typical" driving, I wouldn't expect it to reach anywhere near 1200 F. ... and even less of ya add the effects of ambient air circulating through the engine bay.
The coatings may stay on if you have a mall cruiser. If you have a work truck where it hauls a load up a mountain at WOT expect the headers to turn red. Coating may not remain pretty.
It really does not matter which ones you get, the finishes will not last forever. I would ask what is your reson for the headers other than the obvious. The Cermachromes are nice if you plan to just have for show and a little cruzing around fine, but if it is more for power and sound, then go with the satin black. I personally would go with the satin black and use heat wrap around them to protect the A/C unit and to keep the passanger side floorboard from getting real hot. I used the satin black; Blackjack headers and they held up to heat better than my friends cermachromes. I was running 425hps out of my Camaro and he was running about 100 more hp out of his vette, but his starter to bule up from the heat before mine did anything. Rust will be a facter on either after a while. Hope that helps, I am sure that is a bit more info than you wanted. Also keep any wiring and vaccuum hoses secured away from them. Headers are know to kill plug wires after a while from the heat.
I've heard that the ceramic coated headers ain't good if exposed to water was told they will crack the coating and start to come off if water hits them when there hot anyone experience this or know if this is true?
I haven't first hand had that experience, but I have heard something similar. Te discoloration was the biggest complaint I have heard of. It does seem possible that it would crack the coating if extremely hot and then hit with very cold water. Sudden change in temprature could cause that or to thin of a coating. I haven't heard much good about the Cermacoated headers which is way I always choose the satin black.
