I have an 87 F150 with a 302 bolted to a C6. I want to swap it with a 460. The C6 will work right? I plan to get an old motor out of a truck at a junkyard that has been totaled because it was wrecked on the rear end, so the motor is still in tact, and rebuild it myself. I know I need an ECU and all the parts of the motor but is there anything else that I need that I might not know about? Also what are the stock numbers on Horespower and Torque on the 460?
My plan is to turn it into an off-roader with lots of power but still be able to drive it on the street. I plan to hone the cylinders, new pistons and rings, dont know what cam yet, do a valve job, new lifters, long tube headers, exhaust, underdrive pulleys, and intake. Any suggestions?
don't quote me on this, but no, the tranny will not work at all, you have a 302 small block, and 460's are big block....so the tranny housings will not bolt up..
i just pulled the motor outa my truck, so i could do a performance build up on it..
i'll let you know in a few days, maybe a week or so, and tell you how this thing hauls, buta..it gets spendy, so far, i've put about 4500$ into the motor and parts, and i've still got 500-1000$ to go, so....be sure you know what you want...and are able to get it first
The tranny behind the 302 will not work with a 460. Get an older 460 with the tranny too and use the combo. Try to get one the same year as your current vehicle, grab the engine towers/mounts/crossmember too, that makes things the easiest. If you pull one from an old enough vehicle, you can drop all the electronics. Of course you may need to worry about the emission laws in your state... Plan this one out fully before spending dime 1.
I knew the housing wouldn't match up, i was just making sure the C6 would work. And I do plan to get an old truck and just take parts from it like the mounts and K member and all that stuff. I wont have to worry about emissions because her in Louisiana if your vehicle was manufactured before 1995, it doesn't have to have an emissions test. I also asked another guy yesterday that I know that works at a shop called Thunder Racing here in town and he told me that the C6 would work. I'll call a dealership and maybe they can tell me for sure if it will work or not.
Hey tweaker, what do you plan to do to your motor as far as performance upgrades?
As far as the 302 right now Im just gonna leave it in the truck until I get all the parts I need and I get all the mods and upgrades that I want to put on the engine before I put it in the truck. Its much easier to do everything when the motor is out of the truck and on an engine stand than when its in the truck. Ya'll know what I'm talking about.

Huh? I don't understand what you are saying. Let me put it this way... The housing on your C6 behind the 302 will not bolt to the 460. If you so desire, you can obtain a C6 case that will bolt to the 460 and move the internals over, becasue they do not have a separate bell/case housing. Yes a C6 will work behind your 460. I would also recommend looking into a C5 or an AOD.
dealerships are usually pretty worthless on swaps my local dealer refused to believe that I had an 82 mustang with a 351W and a t5 they told me there was no way that the t5 would bolt up to a 351W so I had to bring my car in and show them and I think they still don't believe it.
Mike and Tweaker are completely correct the c6 from your 302 will in no way work on a 460. you could change the internals over into a new case but that's completely pointless it's cheaper to just get a working c6 from a 460 vehicle. you can also use the tranny from a truck that has a 351M/400.
I don't really agree with using a c5, I personally think a c4 would be better and I wouldn't even use one of those, again that's just my personal opinion. (not to mention it would be hell trying to find a bellhousing for either of those tranny's that would fit a 460
the easiest thing to do is take a whole truck even if it's blown and you buy it for $100 that has a 460 in it so you'd be looking at 84- somewhere around 93 I believe. because you need the motormounts your current k-member will work just fine there is no differences on that between your 302, the i6, the diesel, or the 460(the towers that mount to the crossmember are non existent on the i6 and are all the same on the v8's). if the engine is from an 80's you're ok with all this.
you need either a remote oil filter kit or the stock oil filter swivel deally magiger. you need to have an oil pan for the 80's truck 79-earlier will not work. a fox body mustang oil pan will work. get the radiator you should be able to notice that the radiator in your truck is a little smaller yours will work but if I were you I'd like to have the security of the 460 radiator. (if the junk truck has an engine oil cooler pull that also it's a nice thing to have.
as far as engine accessories go you're pretty much good with anything as long as the steering pump is the same style as your old one and if it's not you can just have a parts store fabricate you some new hoses. (or take the two different hoses from the donor vehicle and your vehicle and have a hydraulic shop splice them together. flex plate has to be from a 460 and make sure it's the right year 460 flex plate the early early one's were balanced differently.
forgot I think you might need a different throttle cable
as far as horsepower and torque numbers you could probably do a search on this site to come up with that
have fun
