OK I went out to my personal junkyard behind the garage and looked at the original, I saw a bracket connected to the shifter. Was this a manual downshift of the tranny?
If so think I will leave it disconnected. I can light the back tires up now, while passing without downshifting.
Thanks

The kickdown lever only handles 2nd to 1st downshift under acceleration. The 3rd to 2nd shift under acceleration is controlled by the modulator. It is set up this way so you won't shift into second at above 60 mph when you accelerate suddenly and red-line your tach. Under normal operation shifts up are controled by the governor valve which reads driveline rpm's and changes gears in the tranny accordingly. Without the kickdown lever you may not downshif to first from a rolling takeoff in second.
