When Jody did my live tuning a year and a half ago he asked me if I wanted it. He said it was something new he had been playing around with. I had him do it to my 60t, my 80t, my 120R, and my 140A. I did not have him add it to my 80E. I now drive in 80T 90% of the time because I like the shifting so much more than that of my 80E I use my O/D off button if I know that I am going to driving at less than 55 mph.
BTW mine down shifts at 47 and unlocks at 30. its perfect for me.
After reading all the input on this thread, I only have the downshifting feature on my 60T, all other tunes will coast when I let off the fuel, I personally like it, if I need to back it down a bit I hit the overdrive button off, expecially on hills, works great and saveson the brakes..
Thanks for all your input and your vote in my poll.
I definitely want to keep this tune when I have live tuning done. I am thinking of having the downshift removed from a 60e tune and put that just below the 80e. That way I can switch to it during city driving. I feel I don't need the downshift feature for the "highway tune", so I can get rid of the "hunting" at low speeds. I don't do alot of city driving, so this should work out well for me.
I'm certainly no expert, but it seems more logical, generally, to have the downshift feature in the tow modes rather than in the economy modes.
Actually, quite the opposite.
The 7.3L shuts off the injectors when coasting under 2000 RPM's with a locked torque converter. In contrast, if it's freewheeling just off idle, it's running fuel to keep the engine going. So in reality, if you are downshifting and keeping the torque converter locked when slowing down, you use less fuel (actually, you use zero fuel until the engine slows enough).
The downshift from od to 3rd at 40 mph is in ALL of my tunes. I did kinda wish that it had that same option between 3rd and 2nd when you've got it locked in UD. that would really come in handy when pulling a load and you've already got it in 3rd.
Guys this is a simple fix. If you don't want it in your tunes have Jody
remove it.
The downshifting was put into all newer tunes due to everyone asking for it.
FWIW- I would want to have the DS then not have it. For those saying its hurting the converter or inner expensive parts, its the opposite of that what Jody is doing for the parts. Its actually helping them not work as hard. I believe you have been discussing what its doing to a stock trans, but this DS strategy can help a fully built trans as well.

I skipped reading all the posts since the first few so I don't know if this is directed at me or not. I personally loved the downshifting from o/d to 3rd in all the tunes. I'd also suggest a downshift from 3rd to 2nd if it's locked in 3rd. This is because alot of times when I tow, I run in 3rd if under 65-70 mph. So when locked in and slowing down, the downshift isn't there unless I manually do it. Which I do quite a bit cause it saves on the brakes and lets the motor slow me down.
Don't know if that's an option or not, but it'd be another added benefit for someone towing.

Thanks for sharing that. I am sure with Jody working with John Woods that it is a good thing. After all what benefit would it be to your company if the tunes you sell are bad for our trucks. I think everyone was just trying to figure out how the new downshifting effects our trucks. I have had a dp-tuner for 2 1/2 years with no problems what so ever and I am so looking forward to live tuning at RRE.

It's taking something that is already going to happen and having a better outcome.
