So i just got back home from an hour and a half drive, when i noticed that the oil pressure was at 0 when i was idling...the dipstick showed that it was running pretty low on oil...so i added about 2 quarts of oil (just a temorary fix till i can do an oil change next week) and when i tried to start it up, it Popped really loud and the oil cap when flying. Now when i try to start it up, it idles VERY roughly and the engine will bog out after about 30 secs...i am very confused as i have never had this happen before! Any ideas as to what the problem could be?!
I read the dipstick a few weeks ago, and it was running low. The truck has an oil leak, so i assumed that the oil gauge was reading low on oil (obviously mistaking that for the oil level (yes i do feel like an idiot now)) I did some research and a lot of people are saying that I added too much basically. I drained some of it out, and it seems to run a little better...although it is idling VERY fast now...I am going to go buy new spark plugs after work today, and do a full oil change, and then readjust the timing as it seems this has been impacted... Any ideas as to what would be the correct amount of oil? It's a 390 FE
Ok so did an oil change (and only added 5 quarts this time), new oil filter, replaced the spark plugs, new valve cover gaskets to fix the minor oil leak. She's still running super rough. Not bogging out anymore, but there is a lot of smoke coming out of the exhaust, and it sounds like crap. Help! Can't afford a new car so i gotta try and get this truck running right!
Well i tried starting it up again on my break, and it POPPED again. the oil cap went flying, again, and the dipstick flew out, etc. I'm starting to think that there is more serious damage than i thought - it just doesn't make any sense...i mean seriously, it drove VERY good when i drove it on Sunday, now this is happening. The smoke this morning wasn't really black, more like a grayish color...a friend was telling me that it could be a busted rod, or something but i don't know how to troubleshoot something like this. Is there anything i can do to try and pinpoint the issue?
May try checking your PCV valvle if it has one, on the valve cover they can clog and cause crankcase pressure build up, also have you checked your coolant level and if it has to much pressure being built up could, not always, indicating a head gasket problem.
How is your timing? and what color smoke? Pull distributor cap, and try to turn the rotor, how far does it go either way? You are getting some big time crank pressure, could be a combo of timing off, pressure going past rings that might be a bit worn, is your exhaust system clear and un-obstructed. PCV valves clogged, or the hose to the intake clogged, or, and don't panic because I have only seen one, but a cracked piston, or a hole in one,,,, most clogged or partially clogged PCVs don't usually cause it to create that much pressure to blow out a dipstick AND your oil cap...
