I agree with the gas in the crankcase senario. It would also explain the low oil preasure if gas is thinning out the oil. It could be a fuel pump diaphram gone bad and allowing some gas to get in the crankcase.
I had a detonation on a 302 like this that blew the oil cap and the front seal out of the engine. It sounded like a stick of dynamite went off under the hood.
Yeah it was loud enough to make my ears ring for a little while...
Ok computer was down for a few days but heres an update: I don't know much about carbs but i believe it's says Holley on one of the stickers on the side of the carb, and it also has Motocraft on the top...I was talking to a friend who is a former mechanic, and he suggested that maybe the timing chain skipped a few teeth...turns out that he was right - i took off the distributor cap and the pin is pointing 180 degrees away from the first spark plug when i set the whole thing to top dead center, i don't know if this can be the only issue, or if there could still be something more serious that made that happen in the first place...does this sound like it could be the stem of the issue? I have to wait till this weekend sometime to try and fix the timing chain, as it sounds like it's a pretty time consuming task...
Slow down. If you are 180 out just turn the crank 360 and it will be right. You at tdc on the exhaust stroke at 180 out. The distributor only turns once for every two turns of the crank.
Also the rotor doesn't have to point to the #1 spark plug, it has to point to the #1 spark plug wire on the distributor cap at TDC on the compression stroke. If some one had the distributor out of the engine at one time it could point any where.
If you skipped a tooth or 4, PARK IT, buy a new timing chain and gear set, and replace it. Once your whole valve train is off, you can bend valves, and all other kinds of fun stuff, best bet is to just park it and fix it right and not hobble along...
motorcraft-holleys weren't all that great if thats what you have it will be a 4-barrel they started them in 83 and put them on Mustangs and trucks with the H.O. engines.expensive rebuild kits i rebuild 2 and the same issues where still there afterwords.
You are running a quart low...better make sure you have the correct dipstick.
F100/350's with I-6 and V8 gas engines take 6 quarts with a filter change, 5 without.
Passenger cars with V8's thru the 1980's take 5 quarts with a filter change, 4 without.
When in doubt, read the owners manual.
My 1965 F100 352 takes 6 quarts. I know the oil pan and dipstick are correct...because I've owned the truck since I bought it new in March 1965.
Bill, I know you are older, taller, uglier, type more useless words to more posts to keep your post count high, than I do, feel you got all kinds of bragging rights since you are the posting princess around here, but Ford not only printed Full and Add on the dipstick but added hash marks too. While I can't measure up to all your gaudyness, I can see where that oil measures on the stick. 5 qts make it to the full mark on my stick. I have never owned a Ford engine that took more than 5 qts. although I understand there are some out there. I'll go by the full and add marks. You do what is best for you.

Exactly how many oil fiters have you passed out over Ford parts counters?
How many quarts of oil have you charged out on RO's?
How much Ford dealership experience do you have?
The answer to all three questions is none.
You never worked at a FoMoCo dealer, so you have no clue and are only going by your own trucks.
Instead of arguing with someone that knows, and making your usual sarcastic and inane comments,
I can say for a fact, My ford take 9qt of Oil to fill and that to the fill level. this is with a Stock marine pan. Numbers has always given very good info, and who cares about how many post one has here if there info is solid?
