You don't have to pull the tranny just want to support it. I think others thought you wanted to pull the tranny. Never done it on a 7.3 but other vehicles. You don't want the starter in until you have the engine mated to the tranny. Might be easier to jack up the tranny to get it mated then lower it. Not sure on the easiest way to do it on these trucks. I'm sure others will chime in.
Much like right now, I am always on the forums when I first wake up before work or right now when I am in between jobs and my mind is in a complete rush.
Wanting to keep the tranny in the truck and just swap the engines.

That's what you need to do. That's why you bought the big strap to hold the front of the trans up while the motor is not supporting it.
The only way the trans needs to come out is if you can't turn the motor over to get the torque converter nuts off. (this should have been one of the first things to check as it's been mentioned before in this thread) Then and only then does the trans need to come out if the truck.
As for the exhaust manifolds, IIRC they need to be changed. Do it once the motor is out if they are different. I'll see if I can find the bolt install pattern and torque settings on those...
Sorry I haven't updated the thread lately. I was all ready to pull the engine yesterday and get to work on swapping parts over, but after speaking to Clay at RiffRaff I am going to wait another week or so on parts. We decided it would be very wise to change simple things like injector O-rings as well as all the other o-rings I will go through on this project.
At least another week wait on parts and then we will see what happens from there.

You should go ahead and pull the motor if that's all you're waiting on. You can get to the injectors much easier to remove them with the engine out. Get them setting side by side so you can get all the other stuff swapped and just be ready for the injectors when you get the o-rings.
There's so much stuff that you can get done while waiting for all your o-rings. I.E. - manifolds, intake plunems, sensors, etc, etc. Then once you get the o-rings you can put the injectors in, the rest of the fuel system, and the hpop and resevior. Then you go back together quickly instead of another week out!
I agree but since I don't have a shop I don't want both engines just laying around outside since I can't cover them both, or fit both of them in the back of my truck.
I mean I could swap the new one in and then just finish the injectors once it is in place.
Hey Alex, how is the swap going? Haven't heard from you in a while. Just hoping that you aren't stuck under the truck..... Let us know how things are going.

Not stuck under the truck! Been busy with my two jobs as the end of the season is here and the college students have gone home leaving me with shifts to pick up left and right.
Still waiting on a box of parts from Clay and then once I find a torque wrench to borrow in town I am going for it! Maybe this Thursday/Friday.
Engine is out and sitting next to the truck. Hoping to use tomorrow afternoon (no rain please) to swap HPOP, injectors and manifolds.
It was a huge pain in the ***. I ran into a couple snags and did what I needed to get around it. I do however, probably need a new flex plate. Anyone got one laying around?
Also, how the @(&*()%# am I supposed to keep the engine some rotating? Having never worked on an auto, I struggled to remove the torque converter bolts and hpop crank bolt because the engine kept spinning. I eventually got them off, but what are my solutions for putting them back on?
The hat is my new "tough luck" hat, and the growler is from the next brewery in our little town!
