I have no answer to your question, but I was actually just thinking about you. Being in Illinois and it's 32 degrees, I was hoping that you were done with this project, and just out having too much "job well done" fun and didn't have time to update us. Sounds like you're getting close though. We're all still pulling for you
Got her fired up again last night. She runs but she's a little cranky which is understandable.
Unfortunately I have several issues to iron out.
Glow plugs aren't working.
I have pin hole leak where the oil pan meets the rear of the engine. Only leaks once the oil gets nice and hot.
Coolant system seems to be acting up and the upper hose never heats up. Thinking my thermostat might be fubar.
A very odd rattle/vibration that comes and goes.
I have to work the next 15 days so I don't quite know when I will get around to this.
I changed my coolant once, drained it all, flushed with garden hose water, and put the plug back in and started filling.
I noticed that it wasnt all going in, thought maybe needs to warm up. Luckily I drove to my friends shop, where he showed me how slowly it needs to be added or it will airlock. Lucky I didnt overheat and blow something.
About the upper hose heating up;
First, it takes a bit of driving before any cooling goes on.
Second, is that the return line guys? if it is, it might always seem cool. ?
I think I almost learned this lesson the tough way. What is the proper way to fill it up? I had the reservoir slowly filling up the other day but I suspect I didn't leave the top off long enough and burp the system out.
I drove around for about 5 miles when I realized that I didn't have any hot air which meant the heater core wasn't getting water. Slowly bled some pressure from the reservoir top, the coolant system made a ton of burbling and then I had hot air when driving. However a mile later I noticed the upper hose was quite bloated and obviously not circulating.

Congrats on getting it running!
Get a long stem thermostat and replace the one that you have in there.
I had no trouble at all when I changed mine out, just pour in the coolant and run it.
Heater worked great the first time through.
