Studder question

I have a 04 f250 6.0 psd......

Ill try to explain the symptom the best I can and any advice would be appreciated!!

When driving between cerrtain mph's usually betwwen 50-52.5 and 70-72.5 with the cruise control set I sometimes get what I would best call a studder..... Almost feels like the trans cant decide what gear it wants to be in? The rpm's dont move and neither does the mph,but you can definetly feel something?

Wierd thing is when your accelerating it doesnt do it only when your cruising or feathering the peddle? it almost feels like its asking me to hit the fuel and when I do it takes off like a bat out of ****

Cant really tell if it feels like the trans, fuel, or what? Sorry but thats the best I can explain feel free to ask me a question and Ill do my best to answer, but any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated!

If its any consellation my last tank of fuel was my best mpg to date 18.73? Also its bone stock and I run Power Service (Thet gray Bottle) in every tank of fuel. If that helps!

Thanks!

Could be other things, but to me this sounds like early stages of Torque Converter shudder.

Happens only under cruise or very light acceleration. You won't feel it under moderate or hard accel, nor deceleration. Usually at freeway speeds in overdrive. Usually gets worse over time. TO me it feels like driving on a grooved highway or even small rumble strips.

This is slippage of the clutches inside the converter. This creates heat which over time will further damage the tranny. Eventually the tranny will shift hard intermittantly. This is the computer raising pressure to stop the clutch slippage. If you get this symptom it is probably too late for easy fixes and it will get worse.

Since it sounds like this is early, you MIGHT be able to cure this with a fluid change and flush. Some people say some of the additives will fix this.

In the long run you will need at least a new converter. If you wait too long, you will need a rebuild.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Thanks Jim that makes sense to me !

Am I correct in thinking a way to test this theory would be to run it with the O/D turned off? Wouldn't that take the torque converter out of the equation? Meaning with the O/D off it should cruise normally or am I over/under thinking it?

Thanks!

Update.....

Tried my theory on the way home and still had the "studder" with the O/D turned off?

Also took it to a parts store and had them check it for codes, and it showed none, the fella said it wouldnt unless the check engine light was on?

Also a guy I work with said it sounded like a "lockout" cylinoid or sensor for the trans .

ANy thoughts?

Locking out OD won't necessarilly stop the symptom since the torque converter lockup clutches work in OD and 3rd in most trannies. So the slipping clutch will cause shudder whether the OD is on or off. It is just more likely to slip in OD since there it a bit more load on the clutch.

A code may not necessarilly be set. My 94 E4OD set NO codes even after the hard shifting symtpom showed up along with burnt fluid. I am a little surprised that no code was set since the computer is raising pressure to compensate for a problem. Maybe it is just my truck has OBD I which is not as picky on sensor issues.

The codes normally are set if the OD light flashes. Buyt like I said, mine never set a code or flashed any lights, just shifted real hard every once in awhile.

Your truck doesn't sound like you have gotten to hard shifting yet, that's good, for now.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Thanks again Jim for the input!

I'm going to take it to Cottman in the morning as they dont charge for diagnostic.....

I've still got a 50/50 warranty for a few months so I'll take care of it now!!

HMMMMMM......

Home from the Trans. shop this morning and he said that he only felt a VERY slight shudder when coming back in from the test drive,no codes came up,the fluid looked/smelled great, the shifts were good... and so on. He did say hed like me to bring it in one evening this week since it seems to do it worse in the evening (last night on my way home it was acting up,yet this morning.... Nothing)

Are these symptoms of anything else ? Fuel issue, clogged injectors, anything?

The thing thats strange again is that it acts up later in the day...... The trans temp, eng temp, are always the same the only diiference is the outside temp????? Makes no sense!!!!

He did say that if it was the tourque converter that when they go they go quick, and as I said before it has seemed to get worse, not physically worse but happeneing mopre often at different Mph's?

Im REALLY scratchin my head on this one???????

every time i've had that shudder on mine its been a clogged egr valve. pull it, inspect it, clean it as needed. .5-1 hour in your driveway, try that and see if it helps. do a search on egr cleaning and you will find the best way to do it. at least in my case its one of the early signs of egr starting to stick. if it isn't egr theres no harm done and if it is, its way cheaper than opening the tranny
