This is my second F-150 truck and I have had the same problem with both trucks after they get up in the higher mileages. Let me explain what is happening to the current one I have now.
In the lower rpm’s in first I have a studder problem. I say studder but it is more like for what your vehicle feels like at the first stages when it is starting to run out of gas. It does not do it all the time. I feel it more in first and second gear but I can feel it in the other gears as well. It is not real bad. Not as bad as when it runs out of fuel. But you can feel it. I do not think it is the fuel pump because I have two tanks on the truck and it does it no matter which tank I am using. I believe each tank has its own fuel pump so that should eliminate that for trouble shooting. Here are some of the other things I have done.
Replaces:
Air filter
Rotor
Cap
Wires
Plugs
Fuel filter
Did a compression check and all cylinders are close to each other.
Can anyone offer any suggestions on this? I am very mechanically inclined myself and can fix this if I could figure out what it is. I am just baffled. If I take it to the shop they are just going to start putting new parts in it until they find out what is wrong (if they can) and it will end up costing me way to much.
We need more info .....What year, engine , trans?????
Also try pulling the codes....Go to www.fordfuelinjection.com and it will
tell you how to pull them and what the codes are.
The first thing you shoulkd do is pull the codes....post all the info on your truck
and im sure someone could help...
Just got my 95 F-150 fixed from this. Check out the "Hesitation" thread in this forum. It covers it all. But most likely is the IAC. Simple 10 minute fix.

I will look into the IAC and see what that is. But I do not have a Hesitation problem. This is happening while I am drivine al low rpm's it does not seem to happen at take-off. But I will read up on this IAC thing. Thanks

OK, here is more info.
The F-150 is a 1995, 4.9L, manual trans, with dual tanks.
I just found out that the fuel filter was not changed. I thought I had did it but with everything else I did I overlooked that. I am going to change it tomorrow.
I also did a code check and the digital meter I was using would not cut the cake. So I took it to advance auto and we did it there. It read no codes.
I just got done replacing the fuel filter. Man you should have seen the brownish crap that came out of it. I took it for a ride and it is still doing it. So now we can rule out the fuel filter.
Here's the low down. I had the same trouble as yall for over a month. Turns out the Idle air control was plugged. It's the small device located on the right side of your throttlebody. It has an electrical connection going to. It has 2 allen bolts holding it. Get a can of carb cleaner. Take it off and clean the crap out of it. Worked for me.

Is that the one that is on the opposite site of the throttle linkage with three wires going in to it?
Not sure cause mine is a 95 with a 302. My linkage is on top and the IAC is on the right lower side of the throttlebody. I don't know if there's a difference between the design in mine and yours.
After I read what Iron Horseman said I took the part off he waas refereing to which happened to be the TPS and looked it over and was going to clean it but could not find my carb cleaner. So I put it back on and drove the truck to work and home tonight. The problem has not reoccured yet. So hopefully it is fixed. I think it might have been a little of both. I think I did not drive the truck long enough to get the air out of the fuel system after I changed the filter and messing with the TPS migh have had something to do with it to.
Now I need to find out why I had so much brown crap in my filter. One of my tanks may be bad or both. How would I find out if one is bad?
Disconnect fuel filter again at rear conection and with help: one holding fuel line in a clean container and the other cycling key to on and off til you get a reasonable amount of clean fuel in the container to verify that the first tank has clean gas in it, probably at least a quart. repeat for other tank - if you get significant trash keep going til it clears up. Be careful with gas and fumes, don't smoke, play with lighters, etc and keep the amount of gas under vehicle to minimum do it outside with good ventilation. Good luck.
