I aquired a 1968 Ford F100 pickup last week. Its in pretty good shape for its age. The previous owner had what looks to be a 6 inch Skyjacker lift kit installed. Its got a 360 with 4 on the floor. Straight pipe with old skool Cherry bombs (rusted, but the old skool ones not the knock-offs of today) It sounds great. The outside has minor rust, and the typical faded paint of age. Interior is in great shape, has been well maintained other than dirt. 3 Fuel tanks, main behind the seat, and two 10 or 15g inside the rear fenderwells. The truck runs good, but the lights are a bit outa wack. When I turn on the headlights, the parklights turn off. Is this normal? Also, when park lights are on, only one side lights up, and the blinkers dont work. I have some work to do. Needs a steering knuckle(or connector from the column to the box.
Considering I traded a Boat that barely ran, he was askin 900 Bucks for it, it was worth the trade. I dug into the electical problem, I have both tail lights now, but no brake lights, and the bulbs are good. Theres gotta be something disconnected somewhere. The wireing was done with the good old brown green yellow white trailer 4 wire. The blinker switch is the culprit in the blinker case. I tore down the column and discovered he had used an assebly from a much newer truck (90's), and attempted to shave the plastic down and force it to work. No avail as the assembly is locked on right turn, and the wires are all crossed. I will be replacing that with either original from junk yard, or a blinker box assembly.
The truck is in over all good shape, a few little minor things that need to be fixed, like the linkage nuckls directly off the the steering column, the one with a space in between two flanges and two bolts holding it together, its been welded a thousand times, I think I will just replace the whole thing. I am a computer nerd by trade, but this is a hobby. She will be my daily driver/restoration project for the summer. I would winter time too, but she is too tall and long to fit in my garage. My kids have already named her "ol Blue" (how original) but hey, shes blue... kinda.....
Just after the firewall in the engine bay the column comes and ends in a flat round end, like a giant washer was welded to the shaft. Theres a bold on both sides, connected to the rest of the linkage, by the same method.
==============| |=====
Similar to the above, the first section being the column, the second have being the linkage. The two "|" are held apart about 1 inch, by two bolts. I dont yet know if this is how it was off the production line, Havent done the research yet. Picture a big 3 inch washer, and on both sides in the same spot is a bolt.
Wierd way to hook the steering linkage up, but again, I dont know if thats stock or not yet.
I am still trying to figure out the rear end. I think its a nine inch, but the plate shows a WD-S, last numbers being S318B, I cant find anything on that plate. Tons of other WD's but not a match to WD-S, unless its a Worn out T WDT S.
Your description of the steering column and steering box junction does not sound like the setup on my 2-wheel drive but that is all I have for comparison and not being familiar with all the models I cannot comment on what you have. Someone should chime in that knows or post another photo.
Tell your kids that it should be named The Blue Meanie. If they dont get it, make them watch Yellow Submarine, listen to the White Album, and read Spider Robinson's DeathKiller. Other than that, youve got a nice lookin ride. Does the Air work?
Actually the Air doesnt work, it was all disconnected and hoses cut. So I removed it this weekend, probably rebuild it. I modified the original Stereo bracket to fit my kenwood deal, and rewired all the ignition wiring. This truck may look to be in good shape, but her electrical systems are all messed up, so I gotta rebuild most of the harness..... Runs and drives fantastic.
