Inner pad wear.

Why do the inner pads wear out so much faster than the outer? How do we prevent it?

Because the caliper piston pushes directly against the inner pad. By pushing against the inner pad, it (the caliper) in effect pulls the outer pad in toward the rotor.
Without going to some exotic brake package, you won't be able to prevent the inner pads from wearing faster.

Wrong.

The brake pads should wear at the same rate if the sliders are working properly. The Piston pushes on the inner pad. That force (according to newtons law) is reacted on the caliper body equally but opposite. Unless there is something to resist this force, the caliper body will move away from the inner pad pulling the outer part of the body towards the rotor, pulling the pad into the rotor surface. This is the same force that is applied to the inner pad again assuming that the sliders are not counteracting the force applied.

Bottom line you need to keep your sliders working properly, pad contact points clean and lubed and you should get even wear.

yep, just did my brakes monday night because my inner driver side was into the rivets, and the outer was 3/4 there still.... the bottom slide pin was seized. seems like every vehicle i've owned here in michigan has had that problem (temp changes and road salt = fail).

I guess that I stand corrected....

I've just never changed brakes on any car that didn't have more wear on the inner pads.

Use Special high temperature caliper grease. Comes in a toothpaste tube or bottle. Black colored, guess it has graphite or something.

Don't get it on the brake pads, or your clothes.

You should clean or remove rust periodically and grease the sliders and metal slid points of the brake system.

When I remember, I try to do it every other oil change or so.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

I have the caliper pins out, but the ones with the rubber end won't go back in, the rubber slides up and mushrooms. How do I get these in?
