460 engine/C6 transmission torque converter problem

I have a torque converter problem that I need some advice on. I have an 82 F250 pickup that I removed the 351 engine from and replaced it with a 460/C6 from a 1978 van. The engine gave out on me after 800 miles so I rebuilt a 460 that I bought from a barn sale(think it is a 1971 engine). When I put it in the pickup I found that the bolts from the torque converter would not go thru the flex plate far enough to put the nuts on. Pulled it out and found that the pilot/stub/snout on the 78 converter was too long and would not go into the recessed hole in the back of the crankshaft. Compared the hole on the 2 engines cranks, 1978 and 1971, and found that the one for the 1971 was smaller.
A mechanic told me that the crankshaft was different on a standard transmission crank than the crank on an automatic. Can anyone provide me adice on this matter? Has anyone experienced this problem? Is there a torque converter that has a much shorter snout/pilot/stub or am I going to have to switch the cranks on the engines in order to use the 78 torque converter? Thanks in advance on any advice you can provide.

i am not 100% sure on this for a 460, but i know for a fact on FE's and small blocks, the crank for a stick shift has a bushing pressed into it. for the trans snout to ride in. i would assume the 460 is the same. you just need to pull out the bushing, and you should be in business.

460 engine/C6 transmission torque converter problem

Matt,
Thanks for the response. I swapped out the crank from another 460 and it does not appear to have a bushing in it but it must. How do I get the bushing out??Grind it out or fill with grease and put a wood dowel in and rap id with a hand sledge??
Thanks

LAST EDITED ON 05-Jun-01 AT 08:44 AM (EST)[p]Bob,

First off if you have a bushing in there, which I don't think you do. It is a bronze oil-less bushing used to hold the input shaft for a manual transmission. You can use the grease and wood dowel method, but you can also remove it by taking a cold chisel and chisseling from the outside edge to the center, eventually it will cut through and you can remove the bushing.

The problem you most likely have is this:

The C-6 torque converters have 3 different versions

C-6 1971-91 289,302,351,400,429,460 w/ 1.375" crank pilot
C-6 1971-91 with 1.250" crank pilot
C-6 1966-84 360,390,406,427,428,(1967-71 429) cid with 1.850 crank pilot

NOTE: 1969-71 429 & 460 could have 1.250" or 1.850" pilot

I got this info from TCI Transmissions website @ tciauto.com

Hope this helps! Its screwy I know.....

460 engine/C6 transmission torque converter problem

Thank you for setting me straight. I probably have that crank that needs the 1.25 pilot on the c6. What I did(pain in the butt) was swap the crank out of another 460 that I had, and the original torque converter I had will work. Checked it out on the crank before installing it. Very nice info to know. Hope it will help others. Really did not think that a Lincoln had a std transmission as this engine was out of a 71 Lincoln?

Thanks again

Bob

I had the same problem when I swapped out my 400 for a 1970 lincoln 460. All you had to do is go down and get the right torque converter.

I have a question for you. What is the specs on the C6 torque converter for the years 1992-1997? I am looking for a good torque converter for my '96 F350 with the 460 and every site I go to only has info for the years you mentioned. I cracked my C6 tranny housing on my '96 so I pulled my spare C6 out of my 79 bronco and rebuilt it but now I need a good torque converter for towing. Can I use my converter that was in the Bronco? Does a converter that was behind a 79 Ford 400 engine/c6 tranny work on a 96 460/c6?
