C6 Torque Converter - Help

I have a 1971 429 and C6 in my truck. I recently bought a slightly used 2,400 stall torque converter for it. The crank pilot bottoms out before the studs go through the flex plate. Can anyone tell me what is going on here?

The guy told me the converter was in a 351w/C6.

Gee, maybe a 351w TC isn't the same as a 429 model. Check the manufacturer's website for your model number vs. what's shown for a 429.

Gee maybe Summit's website says it is the same.. Do your research before being an ***. Also, try reading my entire post completely before responding. I bought a used torque converter and the po didn't have any brand or part number information for me. If he did, I would have posted it.

Sorry, I see now even on the link I posted that 351w and 429 are supposed to be the same.

However, you don't really know what you have, do you? And you didn't say that in your post, so don't expect people to read your mind.

Measure the input shaft diameter, maybe you have an FE model. (1.85 vs. 1.375")

There are at least two (maybe three) different "pilots" used with C6 torque converters. Which one it is depends on the year the C6 was used, not on the engine type, I believe.

Two sizes in the same year range for the 429. One matches the 351w etc, the other matches the FE.

Maybe the convertor is ballooned & worthless. It should at least go in, regardless of pilot size. Especially since the BBF has the same, or in some early 429s bigger than, as the Windsor that it supposedly came from. You might have to find the guy you bought it from & get your money back.

Silly question, but any chance the crank has a pilot bushing/bearing still in it from formerly having a manual trans behind it?
You didn't say if you've ever had the 429/C6 combo together before or not, and your sig lists it as a "project", so I hafta ask........

Good question but it doesn't. I have recent news though. The converter studs on the stock one are 3/8 and the new ones are 7/16.

Yeah, you have to drill out the flexplate for most aftermarket convertors.

Wow, that should be a really good convertor! Enlarge the holes & butt it up. Let us know.

Update as of this afternoon:

Used a caliper to measure the crank pilot journal to be 1.250" and the new converter to be 1.375". SO, I took the grinder to the converter and shaved an 1/8th off the crank pilot. I didn't see this being a big issue considering the stock converter's crank pilot was an inch shorter and had a larger diameter and therefore didn't even enter the crank pilot hole. Since I had the flex plate unbolted, I sat it on the new converter and the studs and holes are the correct size. I haven't put it back together yet but when I get time, I will let ya'll know how it goes.
