I have a 92 F150 300 6 cyl with it's 6th dead E4OD, I have a C-6 from our old 86 f-250 without any linkage, Does anyone know what year steering column and shift linkage would work for this swap? also need Drive shaft (c-6 is four inches shorter, passing gear linkage and speedometer?
My truck has Cruise in the steering wheel, Tilt Wheel, Will I need to replace the computer?
Thanks for any help
the e40d is a computer controlled trans, if you throw a c6 in you will need to replace the pcm. the shifter isn't a big deal, to avoid using an older column just buy a b&m truck floor shifter. The tv cable should just be a boneyard part as would the driveshaft. anything else??
oh yeah the speedo cable shoud be the same if it is a mech speedo, if it's electronic just buy the c6 speed sensor. Ford was still usung the c6 in 1992 so finding parts shouldn't be a huge problem.
What is a tv cable and pcm?
I found a passing gear cable off a 1990 full size bronco (That's the only thing that was left, everything else was gone), not many late models around in our bone yards, it looks as though it should snap into my fuel inject mount but it pulls insteads of pushes My C-6 is from a carb motor (I guess a later model c-6 should have a different arm)
I wasn't sure if they made a aftermarket bracket to bolt to the side of the transmission to snap my shifting cable into it.
My speedometer has a needle but the odometer is electronic, and It didn't have a speedometer cable in the old transmission.
The speedo is run from a sensor on the rear diff. So that should not be a problem, except you will need to plug the hole for the speedo cable on the C-6.
As for the TV and PCM. The TV cable is the kickdown cable that you pulled from the Bronco. If that Bronco is still around, go back and get the shifter linkage from it. You will need it to mount the TV cable. The PCM (Powertrain Control Module), is the brain of the truck. It is what controls the engine and transmission. You will need a PCM from either a C-6 equipped truck, or a manual transmission truck.
Hope this helps.

thanks so much for the replies! I got the hole plugged now I took the plug from the e4od and placed it in the c-6. what about the wire harness from the e4od (just tape up?) The C-6 has a two wire thingy by the shift lever (I assume this is either backup lights switch or safety start switch) The Bronco linkage is gone!! It was the only late model in the junkyard and it looked like everyone in town needed parts. I found the passing gear cable in the tall grass next to it but it the cable only it's missing the mounting bracket that connects to the tranny. Everything else was in the early 80's and older.
I'll have to make a road trip to Louisville to a better salvage yard, but what year(s) do I need to ask for when calling boneyards.
Is the pcm located in the driver side firewall under the mastercylinder, the Bronco still had that? it was a 302 fuel injected, the steering column looked like it would fit right in mine but someone had stripped electronics out of it and broke the trim pieces
When you get to a better yard, try to find a truck as close to yours as posible. That will make it alot easier.
You will need the shift linkage bracket that attaches to the frame or bellhousing, I don't remember exactly where it connects. It should be easy to find. Just follow the TV cable to the transmission and you should see it.
You will also need the PCM from the truck, but it has to be from a 6 cylinder truck. The PCM from a V8 will not work.

The bracket that holds the tv cable is the same bracket that holds the shift linkage. I never knew the speed sensor for an e4od was in the diff. (I guess you really do learn something new everyday!!). As for the shift linkage, I do believe there are aftermarket cable linkages that will replace the bellcrank linkage on a c6. If you replace the cpm with a non computer controlled trans you may have to replace the entire engine harness as well, since the harness that runs to the trans is in the same plug to the pcm. What I would really like to know is why you have gone through 6 e4's, I was talking to a Ford dealer parts person and he told me the e4 was supposed to be a trans based on the c6. He told me an e4 was supposed to basically be a c6 but with an od added.
I don't know why I have gone thru some many. I drive the truck alot of county highway miles without towing, I did have a cub low boy mower behind it when it went out the first time, But I had the OD off, The first went out at 66,000 miles and was rebuilt by a local transmission shop with a very good reputation.
it lasted approx. 20000 miles. each time it would begin shifting hard and then not shifting at all. Once it locked up after pulling in a parking space. The last trans was a jasper rebuilt that lasted 63,340 miles. The truck has 262,000 miles looks like New and engine runs like New. I'm going to a C-6 because I've had several older farm trucks that have been abused by towing, teenagers and farm workers and neighbors and I've only lost one C-6 to that type of abuse. This 92 F150 6 cyl E4OD has been babied since new, This was my go to town truck, Now it's soon to be my youngest daughter's go to school truck.
I got everything today for the big swap and it only cost 125.00 (Transmission linkage, PCM, Drive shaft, steering column.
Her and I will do the swap this weekend. Thanks for everyone's help, I'll let you know how it turned out.
Well, It's done!! It went very easy, I had to drill new holes in the cross member because the frame narrows 1 inch toward the front of the truck. I retained my original steering column and used the cable bracket off the e4od but moved it forward to the 1/2 bolt hole in the bellhousing and bottom hole (over lapping the TV bracket) and use the TV (Kick Down) cable and bracket off a 90 model F150 in the original position. I attached a 6 1/2" flat harden steel piece with the cable stud to the shift linkage, 8 1/4" from the cable bracket in the 1 o'clock position.
Drive shaft from the 90 F150 worked perfect. The Module didn't want to slide in because of the square corners and edges so I had to round them. The only problem I have at this time, is the safety start switch The plug on the c-6 only had 4 wires but mine has eight on the e4od. if anyone knows the color code or I'll have to find a book somewhere. I suppose two are the safety switch and two are back-up light.
The test drive was perfect, But I kept waiting for the fourth shift, 30 ring and pinion may have to put in 3:55 to get the RPM's down
Thanks again for all the help
im not looking for a DD, i have a 200 dollar fuel injected beater, im looking for the easiest way to bolt up a new go system w/ duin to much modification, MPG's drops to zero in the mud, lol, but yeah i would like a manual too, its just the c6 seems so much easier
