302 timing

Everyone says that the timing of a 302 should be 10 degrees, and you can bump it up to 12 degrees or until it pings if you run higher octane gas. Well my motor is running good at 12 degrees on 87 octane.

Well what exactly is pinging b/c no one ever explains it, and does anyone have any experience with running your motor advanced at 12 degrees or higher?

The pinging is the ratteling sound coming from the pistons under load when your using too low of octane or your timimg is too far advanced . Leave it @ 12 if it`s running good.

Novice, fiddling with 'timing' and 'carb' adjustment. Understand, or have been told, it's best to set timing as far advanced as possible without the engine pinging. Set the timing on the 302 at around 12 btc for quite some time and found it occasionally backfired thru exhaust and truck bucked coming to a stop. Recently adjusted timing to around 8 btc and seems to run better. Still fiddling, guess it's a matter of finding 'g' spot somewhere in the 8-12 range.

timing a carb motor and timing an efi motor are different.

You can ask the question of what base timing should be and you'll get a million different answers. I know because I asked and did get a million different answers. I've found a few printed sources, however, that say the base timing should be 6* BTDC. I set my truck to this yesterday, it was way off from this to start with. I cannot notice any difference better or worse.

In my case I'm just trying to get everything set the way it's supposed to before I go trying to tweak it.

If you have a 302, it's 6* BTDC, if you have a 5.0 it's 10* BTDC.

I have an EFI 5.0 and it's running at about 15* BTDC.

Although technically correct, there could still be a distinction. The Ford 300 six cylinder is also called the 4.9L. Ford made the switch in nomenclature at some point, I'm not exactly sure when or why. It could very well be that technically, when referred to as a 302, it means an earlier carb'd engine, whereas a 5.0 refers to a newer fuel injected engine, even though the block is the same.

That's my guess as to what he meant anyway.

My motor was EFI and when I rebuilt it i swapped to a holley 650 double pumper

Engines were set at 6* for emissions standards.Any old hot rodder who set timing "by ear" can tell you the hotter the timing,the better the response,as long as its not too hot.When timing is too hot,the engine will want to crank over hard when hot and ping. http://www.type2.com/library/engineg/ping.htm
