What does everybody run for initial timing on a 302? What is the maximum curve supposed to be for timing? I run 11 degrees initial and she curves to about 40 degrees at 2500 RPM and it pings. Even when I set the initial to 7-8 degrees it will still jump to 40 degrees and ping.
With the vacuum advance you have, and getting away from emissions tune, set it to 12-14btdc and disconnect the vacuum advance and plug the line. It will probably run very well like that.
If you want to bring in some vacuum advance, you will need to get a adjustable unit and slowly bring in just enough so it won't ping.
Supposedly pinging on wot, heavy load that's initial or base timing too advanced. Pinging at part throttle or cruise, light load, is too much vacuum advance.

What about a 78 , with an 84 crank and a questionable cam ? Got the engine from a kid , found out the hard way , it was a different balance crank . Car cam , in a truck set to 78 timing specs .. Runs good , gutless wonder compared to old engine ( that I will rebuild ) Sorry ... Just asking...

It's all in the experimentation. I have found that running the initial timing very high makes the engine very responsive at low rpms. But it can make your idle speed too high and it does make it ping if you use the factory vacuum advance. So if you have insurmountable problems running it high, then you can turn it back a little bit.
Also if you get it too high it won't crank over very well if the engine is hot.
