I have a 1995 F350 4x4 with a E4od transmission that has overheated and slips when you take off in drive. The rest of the gears seem to work including od. It seems to me I can get a rebuilt c6 cheaper than rebuilding the E4od. I may be wrong on the cost of rebuilding the E4. If someone has a suggestion on what may be wrong with the E4 I would appreciate the input. Thanks
I have a '94 350 4x4 crew with 460 e4od, mechanic friend told me last night after work that it should work, but the TPS will have to reworked for a nonelectronic o.d. tranny. I can ask him more about it on monday next week. He did it to his 'bogger a few months ago...
You will need a computer from a truck with a 5 speed or C6 (one that's not setup for an electronic tranny) and new driveshafts. The C6 is shorter than the E4OD, so the rear shaft needs to be longer and the front shaft needs to be shorter.
The TPS has nothing to do with the tranny.
You will need the above listed parts but there are somethings you can get to soften the blow to installing the C-6. You can 'Fool' the computer by retaining the MLPS connected to the wiring loom but left in the neutral position or swap the computer appropriately and integrate the C-6 neutral safety switch into the wiring loom, Find the driveshafts out of a similar truck to yours but with either the C-6 or one of the older 4spds, You may be able to reuse the cross-member but i used one from a truck that had a C-6/AOD in it, use the shift linkage after the column linkage that was installed on the C-6 because it will be the right length and it will have to provision for kick down cable, you will need the kick down cable, if you have a manual shift transfer case you will need the appropriate length hardware as well. The transmission cooling lines will fit into the C-6 but you will need to fit them to the C-6 length-wise by either bending with out kinking or physically shorten them to the C-6. The C-6 will be a bolt in deal afterwards.
(even though you can get a rebuilt C-6 cheaper than the E4OD, the cost of swapping over nearly equals out to just rebuilding the E4OD)
You can eliminate the MLPS by jumping the NSS [Neutral Saftey Switch] I did it with a ZF Swap and I didnt want to leave the MLPS under the truck.Soon I will wire the NSS in to the Clutch switch but for now I just bypassed it.
Thanks for the responses on the E4 to c6 tranny swap. I think that i will have the E4 rebuilt. Sounds easier to rebuild than replace! Any suggestions on how to prevent the E4 from overheating and blowing the front pump seal again? The truck has a 2ndary tranny cooler installed.
Other than installing a tranny temperature gauge and monitoring it when it begins to over heat. You already have a secondary cooler (didnt say if it was big enough to cool though) , but installing an external oil filter that you can easily change can reduce harmful particals in the tranny.
