E4OD using stand alone diesel TECA

A small refresher on my ride. 77 F250 SC 2wd 400/c6. I use this as my camper puller and as with most 400, I want more power. I have considered many options for a new power plant and have finally decided on a 460 for several reasons. Mainly is availability and price. I am also starting to see signs of my tranny failing.

Ideally I will find a donor truck from the early 90's with 460 and E4OD that I can just pull with most all the parts I need. But if i end up piecing things together then I need a controller for the trans. My research has brought up the fact that in 90-91 diesel trucks there was an E4OD. Since these were IDIs and had no electronics or computer controls on the engine, there was a stand alone tranny controller. Is there any reason why I would not be able to use this for a carbed 460 and a E4OD? I can't seem to find much info on it, but from the universal wiring schematic from my haines manual, it looks as if the only thing needed from the vehicle is a vss signal and tach signal.

Also, I have found several donor trucks, but all of them have been 4wd. I read in a post about putting a driveline brake on the 4wd tranny in place of the TC. Again, can't find much info, but it looks as if these came on F and E 450's and up. Do these have the same bolt pattern as the TC?

Would there be any problem with using a 460 and E4OD from a van? can I use Motor mounts from the van?

For those of you who are going to say " just rebuild the C6" I figure if I am changing motors and need a tranny then I might as well go with an overdrive, cause , well i can.

Actually that ran from 1989 through 1994.

None at all.

A wiring diagram from a Haynes manual is NOT to be trusted. It's wrong. Chilton is no better. Both of these manuals are useful for lining a bird cage, but not much else.

You'll also need a throttle position signal if you want the trans to shift.

Yes they do.

Thank you Mark. You answered all my questions. Well, at this stage anyway. I agree with you on the Haynes manual, but after searching online for an hour or 2 not finding anything, it at least worked for a reference. When I get that far I will find an actually wiring schematic for the year.

I knew when I wrote that about vss and tach I was forgetting something. Throttle position is what it was. I can get a kit for a carb from the aftermarket for that pretty cheap. I can actually buy everything aftermarket, but I am frugal and can probably get a TECA from a diesel for less than $100, where an aftermarket is $600.

I don't suppose you know the years that driveline brakes were used on an E4OD tranny?

Thanks again for the info.

Wrong information is better than no information? Not in my world.

Better diagrams are available from Service Manuals, Owner Manuals, Wiring Diagrams, Service Bulletins - Helm Incorporated. Quite often CDs of the Ford service manuals are on Ebay. They have correct wiring diagrams.
