T-5 f3

I'm getting ready to buy a T-5 from an 89 S-10 to put in my F3. If I don't do too much towing with this truck, will this tranny last or is the truck too heavy as is? I'm going to eventually replace the flathead with another flatty but it's going to be stock.

I read a thread a long time ago that actually mentioned that the T-5 wasn't strong enough. It Said something along the lines that the T-5 was only stron enough for 4500pounds. A F-1 would be fine, but the extra weight of the F-3 puts it right around the edge. I thoghty about that route with my flathead and F-3, but after reading that article, and confirmings the weights on a T-5 web site, I decided an auto route would be better. But thats just my 2 cents. Id try and find that info for yourself. Sorry I don't have it, or know where it is.

I think I read the World Class T-5 was a good choice because it's a heavier duty tranny. It was used in the Hi-Po cars like Camero, Firebirds, Mustangs and T-Birds. Not sure if this is completely accurate but do a search for World Class. They aren't as cheap as the T-5s that came in S-10 and other more economic vehicles.

An 89 S-10 wouldn't be World Class, but if it is a V6 trans it wouldn't be the lowest grade T5. By '89 even the 4-cyl models were upgraded compared to the ones used in early 4-cyl Mustangs.

The key element to trans life is the amount of torque you put into it. If you keep the rear axle gears the same as stock, and aren't running loaded, the difference in torque run thru the trans between an F-1 and F-3 isn't that much. If you plan to tow at all, I think you'll be in trouble pretty quick.

For what it's worth, I don't think even WC T5's were recommended for this kind of duty; musclecars don't put high torque thru the drivetrain for extended periods (unless a teenager is driving). If you look at a typical truck 5-sp, they hold a lot more oil than a T5.

What would be a good manual/auto transmission to put behind the flathead to be able to get up to a decent speed on the highway? I don't usually tow anything with it but at times I tow my car a few miles here and there but will eventually have to tow it to my next duty station. That could be 100 miles or 2,000 miles.

If you are just looking for a transmission for a replacement, try a new thread titled "big truck trans needed", get Wm Joe and those guys to put in their experiences.

T5 transmissions are rated by the amount of torque they can handle. A modified but still streetable flathead doesn't exceed this rating.

Here is a web site you can use to identify the vehicle a transmission came from from the tag number on the transmission. http://www.5speeds.com/t5/index.html The tag identifier is at the bottom of that page.

People here like the t5 from the S10 because the shifter is located farther forward on the tail housing than on the Mustang and Camaro t5. Thus allowing you to still use a bench seat. I would recommend using a WC (world class) model as it has a higher torque rating. I believe all pre-1993 S10 t5s were not WC but I'm not sure on this. In 93 GM started using the WC transmission in the S10. Interesting thing is they retained the Ford bolt pattern but used the GM 1 1/8 inch 26 spline input shaft. I found one from a 1993 Sonoma.
