Hi Guys, Yesterday got back from a trip my 5.4 in my 2004 screw starter knocking. i noticed when i was backing up in to my drive way, which sit at an angle, it incline and higher than the street like a ramp. that is when i hear it knock a little. temp was normal gas consumption was 19.2 mpg at 75 mph no wind. well all looks normal. i was using 86-87 gas. any advice, it has 67000 miles
thanks
unless you ran it out of oil, likely culprit is the cam phasers, Do you only hear it when the engines at operating temp? and below 1200 rpm's. mine does it, have no problem, just sounds like a diesel at idle.
Do you possibly mean 'spark knock'? Just wondering since you mentioned the gas. 'Pinging', if that's what you're talking about, could result from a number of causes, but you need to fix it soon as it's very destructive.
I had this truck since new. after it broke in. After first 500 miles first oil change at the dealer , after that every 3 000 miles regardless, and i have used 5-20 mobil 1 Synth. Always used synth in all my cars. last oil change went to walmart and they used castrol 5-20 synth they did not have mobil at that time. so i went ahead with castrol since i have a BMW cabrio and they recomend
castrol to their engines. what can be wrong. I talk to other people at work and said could be low octane gas. like i said i was on a trip and u never know in small towns what gas is in there. so any more ideas/
Filter choice is more important than oil brand. The 5.4 is really sensitive to the brand of oil filter and oil weight, The opinion of most on this forum, myself included is that Fram is not the best choice for these trucks.
What I have seen most in FTE posts is Motocraft. I personally think there are a few other good filters to use (e.g. Bosch, Mobil), but Motocraft seems to be the community consensus. Anybody else think differently? I get mine changed at the dealer so always using Motocraft. No problems at 63k miles.
