I can't decide what tuner to buy. I have an E-350, 7.3L 2001, and not many people make a tuner for my van. I have found these two brands that have them. Jet seems to have more options available for my van but I can't find many people who have used them on diesel trucks. They seem to be popular with gas vehicles and they are a little cheaper. I also want to stay below $400. I like the Hypertech, but it offers no options but 3 stage programming. (are the other options good to have?) And one other question...do I have to do any other modes for the chip? I did have a K&N filter but took it out after I was told by this forum and others to take it out. I have stock everything. I am realy just doing it for fun and fuel economy and the only thing I pull is a 16 foot enclosed trailer with motorcycles in it. About 8k lbs. Thanks for the help.
Go to Power Hungry Performance. Bill has been tuning both gas and diesel rigs since 97. You can get his Phoenix chip with 6 tunes for 369.00. If you only want 3 tunes its only 279.00.
I've had a couple of different tuners and I like PHP the best. Power Hungry Performance - Phoenix 4-Position Chips
If you get it tuned, you'll need gauges. The van has no I/C, so you really need to watch the EGTs. Also, think about cutting the muffler out & putting in a straight pipe. That will help the EGTs as well. Last I checked, you can get a DP F5 for about $250 with No-Start, Stock, & two custom tunes. Most like the 80 Econo tune, but you could get in the tow version instead and a fun tune like 120 Race. Or get 80E & 60 or 80 Tow, depending on what you want to do.
But I highly suggest you put at least a pyro in to watch those EGTs. Towing with a tuned van with no I/C may produce some high EGTs...
Yeah the vans don't have an intercooler but they have the bigger turbo that helps keep things cool to. maybe not as well but it's what works on the vans.
So many choices. One thing I have found is the F-350 or 250 tuners don't seem to work for the van. I guess I need to get on the phone. I am also having a hard time finding someone to install a straight pipe here in Texas now that it's illegal to do. I guess I could contact any welder but then it wont pass inspection. What do you all think about a glass pack?
Contact DP-tuner.com or TW chips and they will custom make you a chip. They have tunes for almost every option and even do custom tunning if you really need it.
If you're in Texas give Tony Wildman a call, he's out of Ft. Worth. He can work his magic on your van, unlike any tuner or programmer you can buy off the shelf. http://www.totaldieselperformance.com/
I can't help you with muffler options, there are guys that have purchased big truck mufflers and are happy with them.
I would strongly suggest looking for gauges to monitor your van, and a bigger exhaust will make a big improvement for exhaust temps.
Good luck and keep us posted on what you do!
