Talked to local performance shop again. The guy there stocks the Superchip tuner and now the Hypertech "box". He thinks the Hypertech is the way to go. I talked to him for awhile and then called Hypertech and talked to them for awhile. Product sounds interesting, but I am not sure about it. One nice feature that it has is a button on the dash that allows you to switch, on the fly, between the stock tune and Hypertechs three levels. I believe the ratings were 56 HP, 85HP, and 117HP (don't remember the torque numbers). When I asked about having to relearn as you changed settings, I was told there was no relearning process.......and a few questions later I found out that it doesn't change shift points so I suppose it makes sense that the truck wouldn't have a learning curve. When asked how it makes the additional power, I was told that it chages the timing, remaps the fuel, and changes three other things that they can't disclose to the public. Was also told that you can tow in all three settings but when I asked more specific questions was informed that maybe you wouldn't want to tow 10K+ loads for long hauls in the high setting.
My question for everyone is what do you think so far and does anyone else have any info to share about the product. Also, what about the lack of changing shift points....would this be a good thing or bad thing. Since I have heard for problems people had with bad shift points, then since it didn't modify them it would be one less thing to worry about.
Its the fact that the shifts aren't modified that causes the problems. When you increase power on the 6.0 (and 7.3) the shifts must be modified or you end up with crappy shifts. This is especially so in the 6.0 because there is a torque table supplied to the transmission that tells it how to shift based on the amount of torque the engine is applying. If this table isn't updated when more power is added you get bad shifts. The only way around not updating this table is backing off on the power (a lot) during shifts.
