Question No O/D and Drive

Hello, I am new to the club and have a question for the group. I have had several ford explorers and have never had this issue. I have no drive or o/d. when I reset the system (by removing battery cables) everything is fine until I turn off the engine and try to start again. It shows up that O/D is off and I have no drive. Is this the solenoid or something else?? I am hoping this is something I can fix myself. I usually do all the repairs on my trucks. but, have not run into this issue before. Any input would be greatly appreciated

Thanks, Mike from Ohio

Mike,

Can you post the specifics about your truck like the model, year, engine, miles, 2 or 4 wheel drive, etc. etc.?

To the top...

I know nothing about those trucklets. Maybe posting in the Explorer forum would get you better help?

But when you say "drive", do you mean that it will not move when in Drive but will if you place the selector in any of the other forward position and reverse?

It will go into drive (o/d light flashing) when I get up to speed the engine will wind out like the trany is slippin. but, when I take the battery cables off and reset system it runs fine until I shut off again. Thanks for the help. I will post in the other forum too.

The flashing light means that the computer has stored a trouble code.
I would get the codes read, may pinpoint the fault.

I wholeheartedly agree with Lazy K. Get the codes. Many auto stores will do this for free.

This is just an educated guess, but it sounds like either the PCM or TCM is not quite right. It is either storing or not overwriting some bad parameters that it is "learning", and the "reboot" (disconnecting the battery) is forcing it to go back to what is written in the firmware. The O/D light flashing tends to make me think it is the TCM (but that is no guarantee).

Check the PCM connector and see if it has gotten loose somehow. A whole lot of tranny issues are connector based. The flashing light is a PCM fail indicator usually. It may be a torn wire up front or a bad solenoid connector at the tranny or transaxle. Tranny in this case.

I don't think so. The PCM (there is no TCM in these trucks) has detected a problem. That made the OD light flash, stored a code to tell the tech what's wrong, and put the trans into failure effects management mode, which is why some of the gears are not available. The PCM has determined that the trans either can't shift to those gears or will cause more damage if it tries to. So the solution is to not command a shift to those gears.

Disconnecting the battery erases the codes so the PCM doesn't know that anything is wrong until it runs enough tests to start over with the codes. Until then it will command all the gears, even if that causes much more expen$ive damage.

Get the codes read before disconnecting the battery.

That's a good point - but how does the PCM detect it?

I still think it's a connectivety problem

I guess the codes will provide clues.

There are many different tests that the PCM uses to detect problems. It can check the electrical circuits. It can check that the speed sensors are reading when the should be. It can check that the gear ratio across the trans is what it should be. If any of these, and a few others, are not right a code is stored.

It could be a connectivity problem, it might not be. It's impossible to say without the codes and some diagnostics.

My OD light was blinking and by the time I noticed it my transmission was cooked. $2400 later and I am back on the road.
