tire width VS. rim width

I asked this in the wheel forum but no one has answered.

I would like to place larger rims and tires on my truck but I'm puzzled... in the old days you had a choice of 15 and 16 inch rims and they were between 10 or 12 inches in width.

Now days it seems like all rims are only 9 inch in width. Will a tire (38inch tall by) 13 to 15.50 inch wide fit on a rim that is only 9 inches in width? Im shooting for a 20 inch rim but the styles I like are only 20,18,17 x9.

Because most newer vehicles can't take wider and taller tires without serious work and the rims are for plus sizing (rubber band tires) and not for adding wide traction tires.

Yes, but, for tires 33> and up you really should stick to the 4" rule. Basically any tire is good to go as long as it is 1-4 inches wider then the rim. So, for a 9" rim, 13" is the most you want to go width wise. Especially if you go BIAS.

Doesn't Tyres Int. have rims in the style you want?

It all depends on the sidewall hieght. Personally I would look at what the tire manufacturer recommends for that tire size. If you use too narrow of a wheel it will pull the sidewalls in too much, making the tire look stuid and have abnormal wear. Also too wide the sidewalls will be pushed out too much, and it will be easiier to pop off the bead.

Are you using these on or off road? As suggested above, check with the tire manufacturer to see what they recommend. If you use is manly off road then you can go with a rim that is a little narrow then they recommend.

For a 13.5" wide tire, I wouldn't go less then a 10" rim and for a 15.5" wide tire, I'd go with a 12" wide rim.

For a DD that is mainly on road, go with a wider rim for better tire wear.

See what the tire manufacturer recommends and if there is a range in the width go with the wider one.

wheel needs to be the same as the section width of the tire, preferably wider
