Just bought an 04 Power Stroke with the 6.0 and changed to oil b/c I didn't know how many miles were on it. After draining all of the oil I took the old filter out and put a new one in put the filter cap back on and then put the oil plug back on the oil pan. Then added 15qts which is what the book calls for. I have noticed the oil is above max and is just short of where the plastic begins. So I would say it is alittle over max is this normal after an oil change? It has been a few miles now and is still up there?
15 quarts is the total capacity of the motor, but an oil change only requires about 13.5 quarts of oil. The High Pressure Oil Pump holds quite a bit and does not drain when the pan plug is pulled.
You need to drain a little of that oil out to get the level in the middle of the cross-hatched area of the indicator.
This is a quote from my owners manual, engine oil 14.2L (15.0 quarts) foot note 2 says includes 1.0L (1 quart) in engine oil filter. Thats what I have been putting in mine for years now. I would imagine if you drained the entire engine you would get around 17 quarts.
hmmmm now im confused??? I bought the 15qt oil change from advance it included ford motorsport oil and new filter. your telling me I should have put all but a qt and a half in there? Is this something diff with diesels bc I have never heard of that?
I've seen the statement about using only 13.5 or 14 quarts on an oil change from many members. However, I've never found it to be true. I drain the engine hot, wait for the oil released when the filter cap is removed to drain thru the engine and let things drain and drip for 10 minutes or so. I've always added 15 quarts and always found this to put the level right at the top of the crosshatch area on the dipstick.
The owners manual says to use 15 quarts and that seems accurate.
Rambo76...first off if you drained your oil before removing and changing the filter you held at least 1/2 to 3/4 qt of old oil in filter housing...then by putting 15 qts in, you overshot the mark. I never have put more than 14 qts in. Like SteveBricks said...drain some of that outa there.

You did just fine.
Dry engine fill is 18-19 quarts. Specified refilled capacity is 15. Distance between add and full is 2 quarts. Some prefer to have their level in the middle of the range on the stick and only add 13 1/2 or 14 quarts.
We always refill ours with the specified 15 as noted in signature line below.
All I can add is that I drain my oil the proper way and 14.0 quarts puts it to the top of the dipstick. I will not fill past the top of the dipstick - it does not make sense. Bottom line - use your dipstick and you will be fine.
