V10 FM Drone
The muffler guy seemed smart enough and he convinced me that the Super 40 would get me the deepest tone. At all costs I did not want the indy car or ricer sound.
The sound is what I expected but now I have a loud and obnoxious drone at about 1500 rpm. Everywhere else it sounds good but the problem is that around town the sound goes from good to irritating as soon as the OD kicks the rpm down into that range.
I will probably go back and ask for something else but hope you V10 dudes can make suggestions. In looking at the Flowmaster website I'm thinking the series 50 HD might get rid of the interior noise but still give a decent outside sound level.
Ideas?
We had a customer tell us to try a Gibson muffler has they did not experience the drone. Dont remember which Gibson muffler it was though...
Now on our 99 V10 with the FM70 I get no drone at all. 2v VS 3v V10 I guess.
With my setup it is fine at 1800 but when the O/D kicks it down to 1500 it's loud enough to interrupt conversation and you can feel the vibration through the floor. I thought pickups were less affected by interior noise compared to an SUV, which is why I think FM came up with some of the later series variations to quient the inside noise.
I have an FM70 on my truck which I blocked of the one chamber on one to add sound. When the muffler was new I got no drone but now that its broken in I get some at around 1500rpm but nothing loud or obnocious.
I kind of figured I would have to go to a higher series muffler but am looking for the middle ground in exterior and interior sound.
I also had figured that I need to stay with a chambered muffler. I've heard that straight thru designs are higher pitched and ricey sounding. Has anyone had any success with any of those on a V10?
Heres a thread that shows what I did to my exhaust. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...-fm70-mod.html If you get an FM70 and its still too quiet after its broken in you can block off one of the chambers like I did.
I have some vids of the 3V with an FM70 I believe. I'll post it when I get a chance.

I asked about a 50 series but he stayed with the 70, and noted that if I did go with a 50 to get the quietest one. He said for a V-10 the 70 series flows just as good as any other, but just tames the odd sound that comes with this motor. he said the V-10 is a great engine, just hard to make them sound good (or like a V-8 which is what everyone wants to hear).
So I studied their charts and ordered a 50 SUV. I would like a bit more sound, but this one should take care of the drone that I am most concerned with.

When I eventually change from stock on my 07 2V V10, I'm going to use the FM70. Why? BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT 5-STAR TUNING USES TO TUNE THEIR V10's!!!!!! Why would they use something that gave them less than the best results they can publish?
Why ask a question in this forum and then not take the advice from the two of the most successful folks working on V10's? (above previous posts re: Flowmaster and 5-Star comments).
Update: I had them install the 50 series SUV muffler and that toned most of the drone out. It is still there between 1500 - 1800 but it is much less. If you want to get rid of it totally I suspect that the 70 series would do the trick....just like the FM guy said.
I may add that IMHO there is a difference between a V-8 drone and a V-10 drone. For some reason I can smile the whole time my Mustang GT 4.6 is droning along, but the V-10 in my truck is simply different. Almost a little too much like and airplane or a "dreaded" V-6 with a strait thru. I am fine with a quieter good flowing muffler like the 50, or quieter yet, the 70 series.
