Just installed a flowmaster super 40 muffler on my 2012 f150 with the 5.0L. It sounds really good except for the drone in the cab when on the highway. When installing it I moved it forward about 10 inches closer to the resonator and I am thinking that I should have kept it back as far as possible. Can anyone confirm this or give some advice?
User "Johnday" had some issues with drone on his truck when installing a Roush exhaust. Not sure what his end solution was but he might chime in here if he sees this thread.
good article thanks for posting. I will push the muffler back closer to the axle, as of right now its sitting 18" from the axle,so that sounds to me like the issue.

Here I am. I'm afraid I never really did solve the drone issue with that Roush. I did limit the drone somewhat by installing a Flowmaster Deltaflow, downstream of the Roush, and that did make it bearable, but I still didn't like it. Basically I gave up, and got a Borla S Type put on. Worlds of difference. I figure I went through around $2K in these components I tried. I wish I'd just bought the Borla to start with.
thanks for the replies, I decided to go to the local muffler shop and having them install a muffler that claims to not drone but have a descent sound to it. Will let you know. Thanks
I've never had a flowmaster on anything that didn't have a certain RPM that it didn't drone at. The worse was my '68 Camaro with a small block, turbo 350, 4.11's and 2 chamber flowmasters. Thing was unbearable at around 60mph.
I had 50 series on my Fullsize Bronco and the drone wasn't horrible, the shop had it sitting at a 45* angle which they claimed would help. I later went with a Hooker Aerochamber muffler and its awesome. no drone at all

I did a resonator delete with a FMC pipe for $75 bucks first... should have just done the Borla from the start! Love the sound of the S-type
I have a 2014 150 with a 5.0, i installed a BORLA S type at the rear of the vehicle, just before it loops up to go out...No Drone whatsoever, it sounds awsome.
I took off the flowmaster and had the local muffler shop install an xlerator muffler and its the exact noise as the flowmaster, I called him and he wants to put a glass pack on right after the resonator. I am almost ready to put the factory muffler back on and call it a day.
After driving on the highway today for about 45 minutes, the factory muffler is going back on, I dont know why these muffler and exhaust companies cant make a product that doesnt drone so much. It sounds almost like the that noise when you open back both windows at the same time and it flutters that almost makes you puke!
