Yes, you're fine. The 4.6's had less problems spitting plugs than the 5.4 and 6.8 in general (theory is shorter stroke, less vibration, less cylinder pressure), and the cylinder head redesign circa mid 2003 doubled the threads in the heads, so you're good to go.

Good luck,
George

Dunno so much about the pickups--I've got an E150 van with a 4.6. Mine was an '02 with a Romeo engine, and I got a new pair of cylinder heads (with the additional spark plug threads) very luckily under my extended warranty because of a different cyl head problem. And I got the replacement heads in 2005, so they are the improved ones. So I know more about 4.6 heads than I really want to The pickup will probably have a Windsor engine, but I think they made similar changes at similar times on the head design in terms of plug threads.

With as few miles as this pickup has on it, just make sure it hasn't been in an accident; check the trans shifting. My 4R70W tended to shudder a tad and used a product called shudder fixx (along with fluid/filter changes at 40k miles) and the trans is great at 72k. I'm guessing the F150 has the (related) 4R75W.

I'll defer to the F150 guys for more feedback on the rest of the pickup.

Good luck,
George

4.6 2v is a really solid motor

as for the rest of the truck, at that mileage it should be cherry.

check the normal stuff and don't let your excitement run the deal. Assume the truck is a Lemon until you've proved it otherwise.
you never know what the prior owner has done to it. I bought a 1994 F-150 that looked and drove amazing

about 3 months later, the tranny 1-2 and 2-3 synchros started going out...I started investigating it, and it had been used to tow horse trailers...even had a Class V hitch welded to the frame, and an AAL that I missed because I was so excited about it

I have about 75k on my F150 and so far so good.

I got an Edge tuner about 25k into it (bought the truck new) and firmed up the shifting and made it a bit more peppy.

The only other thing I would wish for this truck and should be making that wish come true within the year is a better diff. The 3.55 open diff is okay for this truck, but I have 285 series tires on it and it takes a bit of work to get up to speed. I want to switch to either a 3.73 or even a 4.11 if I can find it and I think it would be perfect. I drove a F150 4.6 with the towing package and I would have thought that it had the 5.4 if I didn't know better.

I have seen these engines treated like red-headed step-childeren and they still come back for more...you can easily lose count of all the 4.6-powered work trucks here in Houston and they are, I am sure, treated quite badly. That is all we have where I work at and they are really resilient to the abuse they are dealt.

They aren't the strongest, and they aren't the biggest, but they are still some of the most reliable.
