I'm new to forum and have a question about '04 heritage. How
is the 4.6l in towing and all around mpg? I'm thinking of trading my '99 f150 4x2 extcab 4.2l v6 truck for '04 4x4 extcab 4.6l v8.
I love the ride and room of '99, but not the power. So I'm hoping for some input of what the 4.6l v8 in a 4x4 extcab. I mostly run
highway miles, and only towing is mostly my boat. Boat may be in
the 1500/1800 lb range. The '99 4.2l v6 tows ok until you get in
the hills, then it lacks the ponys.Any input would be helpful.
It should tow that boat OK. Make sure that it has 3.55 or 3.73 gears.
From what I have read on gas mileage, they range from 12 to 18 depending on driving style and climate.

All the trucks on the lots seem to have 3.31 gears in them. If i have to order one, I will go with 3.55 lsd. The rebates are hard
to turn down. $2500 + $1000.
If you buy one with the factory tow package, I believe it comes with the 3.55 gears. Mine did. I tow my 3500 lb boat about once a week with my 4.6 it it does a good job.
Good point, make sure that you get one with a tow package. It has a stronger battery, tranny cooler and powersteering cooler. It will also be prewired for trailer lights and have a hitch.
The trucks I see have the towing package but seem to come with the 3.31 gears. How are the 3.31 gears for towing? I asume that gear would be good for highway use.
