Everyone here is full of such good information I thought I would ask a BASIC maintenance question. Is it a must to use the motorcarft air filter or would another one from a parts store be just as good at a reduced price? I would hate to save a little money now only to cause a problem that costs a lot later.
TIA
I'm a fan of using motorcraft parts when available, i've seen aftermarket filters come apart and not filter as well....and since the price is only a few dollars every few thousand miles...i'd stick with motorcraft...
I was afraid I wouldn't get any responses because it is such a basic question. I have always done my own maintenance on all my vehicles, (4 now) and I never really paid too much attention to OEM parts. Always had good luck with certain oils, filters, etc and just stuck with them. This truck, on the other hand, is a whole new ball game for me and I can’t afford to mess it up. I am probably being paranoid.
Not sure about air filter but motocraft oil and filter very reasonable at Wallys World. Never could imagine a manufacture recommending something to harm their product. The correct oil filter real important on these engines.
Are you saying that I can buy motorcraft oil and filters at wal-mart? I have never seen it at my local one. Probably because I am not looking.
Yes you can Ford filters are about $ 3.50 I stock up when I xross over to see my son as they are $12,00 plus up here.
also found air filter there its fram & has the felt strip on it #CA9687 almost 1/2 of dealer price. should be ok for air intake.
back to the air filter question. When my air filter went bad i got me a k&n and no more worries till i put about 50,000 miles on it then i'll have to service it. Just a little cleaner, water, and re oil it and im done. I ran one on my 78 150, 94 150, and my 06 150. I've never had a problem with them.
I have been paranoid about using oiled filters with the MAF problems I had in my 98 and wasn't using an oiled filter. I need to get a case of air filters and just keep an extra in the truck so when I think about it I have no excuse to change it right then when I am thinking about it. Glad I don't have to change that big bucket one I had on my 4.6L anymore...PITA.
I have been paranoid about using oiled filters with the MAF problems...
I had heard some of the same things. I have a K&N in another truck and it has worked fine for many, many years. However I thought I read here that with these newer trucks we should stay away from oiled filters. Anyway, for the time being I will be using the motorcraft filters as recommended.
if I have to go with an aftermarket disposable, I always use Wix filters. From heavy equipment and off-highway use stuff they have never come apart or done anything they were not supposed to do.
