If I remember correctly I had to use the tap separately. I used a socket on an extension to tap the heatshield then removed it and threaded the puller tool. I hope yours is not a rear plug like mine was. It can be done but it is a PITA.
On my lisle tool it was a one procedure operation. you slide the aluminum piece down in the spark plug bore and then the left-hand tap fits down inside of it. You then turn the tap into the heatshield and tighten down on the big nut on top and it comes right out. It works awesome!!

Did you have to put any kind of plug in when you tapped it? Or did all of them still have the ceramic piece in to catch any shavings? This tool doesn't come with any plugs. Does anybody know where you can get any just in case the ceramic comes out on mine?

If you can or cannot find or make a plug to fit, I recommend you use a lot of axial grease on the tap. That will keep a good bit of the shavings stuck from falling. I actually had no shavings in the plastic cup but had a bit in the grease.
