my dad has a M in his 79 and it runs pretty strong with a eddy intake and 4bbl carb rr's and a cam....but i like the W's cuz parts are so much easier to find for them and there's more stuff available for them than the M's...so i say W. put a good top end on it and you can acheive 400+ hp easy
Take it from someone who was around when the 351/400M s were newly installed in new trucks, They were OK, but not fantastic, you were left seeing Chevy tailights all day long. Even in stock form the 351w and the 460 blow them out of the water, with a few mods the difference is out of the ball park in favor of the 351w/460.......Aftermarket supports the 302/351 and 460 with a mass of choices for relatively low $$$.............Not so much for the old Ms, and what you find is EXPENSIVE!.
Being i had a 400M in a 83 f350 in highschool, i know these are not any type of race engine. I even had a cam, intake and carb. My friends 6cyl f150 would be right behind me in a race
I had a 400 in my 79 F250,BTW the proper terminology for a 400 is 400.The M is only added as designation to the 351 to disstinguish it from the other 351`s.There is only 1 400 so it does not need the M.
