I have a 90 f150 with the 5.8L my question is if you shop online at Autozone, Napa, Advance auto, etc.. and enter what vehical you are shopping for They all say the 5.8 engine is a Windsor. I thought they quit making the windsor years ago. I thought that this engine is a M. Anyone have the real story behind this?
In stock form, the 351m and 400 motors don't even make good boat anchors. However, you can build them up to be powerhouses for a lot less than you think. They actually make very strong aftermarket engines.
Seems to me this could turn into a "which is better" thread too easily.
According to the web based resources (take it for what it is worth) the 351M/400 were not made after 1979, with the supposed last 400(?) installed in 1982. All fuel injected 5.8 liter engines are the windsor-block based 351. As for which is better, from about 1972 until fuel injection not many (if any) of the engines of that era were stellar, but there were alot of factory duds in alot of manufacturers trying to acheive EPA requirements of pollution and mileage.

built up would they run with a 460?? just courious was gunna do a 460 swap for a bush truck, but hard to find.. can get lots of 351m and 400 frum old 2wd trucks.

I am really not much of an expert on the 351m/400 motors. There is a forum here you could check out though that would be able to give you better answers than I could.
ummmm..... i really doubt a 400m could run with a 460, maybe a built 400 and a stock 460 but you can get 700-800hp out of a 460 really easily with off the shelf parts and not spend too much coin either
like said, the 400m was an engine doomed from the beginning. it came out at a time when all the manufacturers cared about was making emissions standards. look at the 460s that came out in the late 70s and early 80s, they were all under 300hp turds. if the 400m had come out 10 years earlier it might have a better reputation. you could get the hp out of the 400m if you wanted to, the aftermarket just isnt as strong.
as far as power on a budget, a 390, 429, or 460 will blow it out of the water. which would be my top 3 choices if building an all out motor.
