Thermostat Issue

Had new tires and wheels put on my 95 F150 at a local shop. Also had them replace the upper and lower ball joints on the right. I had a Motorcraft thermostat that I was going to replace when I changed the coolant. The thermostat in it was okay, but I bought the truck with 122k miles and I'm replacing the replaceable as I go. So anyway, since the truck was in there, I told them to change the coolant and thermostat. They told me (and they were correct) that the Motorcraft thermostat was the wrong size (I'll get to that later). They got a thermostat from NAPA and put it in.

When I first drive the truck, the needle on the temp gauge goes way up (about 1/8 inch short of overheat) but quickly settles to just above midrange. I put some additional coolant in the reservoir because it was near empty after I drove it home. The needle still goes way up, but it settles right about midrange. Could it be the NAPA thermostat? Wanted to get some input before I call the mechanic back.

Also, I bought a bunch of parts from AutoPartsGiant.com. Their prices are real low for Motorcraft parts, but they take a long time to get and you don't always get the right parts. The thermostat box was properly labeled, but the wrong part was in the box. The plug wires I got from them were defective.

Thanks for the help on the thermostat.

you get what you pay for. cheep parts are usually CHEEP parts. back to your truck. my guess is that they never got the vapor lock out of the truck. in the morning, go out, and remove your radiator cap, set it aside, and start the truck. turn on the heat to high. watch inside the radiator for air bubbles to start comeing to the top. let the truck sit there and idle, it will start to warm up. when the level goes down add some coolent. keep doing this. be patient, this could take up to 45 mins. . when you are satisfied no more air is in the system, put the cap on and fill your reserve bottle to the warm line. do not take the cap off when hot, it will burn the crap out of you. shut the truck off, and let it cool off. check the reserve bottle, it may have pulled a little more coolent in, that's ok, just top it off.hope this helps
