Has anyone installed one of the Superduty 2008 center consoles in an Excursion? I haven't seen anyone comment as such, but am thinking about it for a "new" 2003 Excursion I'm picking up on Friday. I do have one in my '02 F250, and had to remove the seat armrests for the new conosole's lid to raise completely. I expect I would have to do the same in the Ex.
I'm also wondering about whether or not the mounting brackets for the '08 unit will bolt into the Excursion seat bracket mounts.
If this is an old topic, please excuse my bringing it up again, but I really don't spend any time in the Excursion forum (even though I probably will do so more in the future).
Since the seats are the same between the Super Duty and Excursion, whatever challenges you had to overcome before will have to overcome again. But it will work. That is, unless you get a 9 passenger like I have(had). Then you don't have any armrests & stops to deal with.
I was hoping you'd chime in, Ken, but I couldn't remember if you had one in your Ex or not. Thanks for confirming my suspicions. I'm going to go ahead and get one, then.
What I'm planning on doing for my arm rest stops on my seats is to use something like a PVC pipe cap, custom epoxy a socket inside that will slide of the arm rest's stop pin, and then also have an epoxied sleeve that I can bore into from the outside end of the cap for the original bolt to hold it in place. I'll recess that bolt opening so I can use a plastic hole plug to cover the bolt head, and I'll also use the right colored interior paint for color-matching. I also want to turn the outside edges on my lathe to take away the "PVC pipe cap" appearance with some kind of decorative profiling.
Yes, even with the stops left in palce, there is more than ample room for the lid to come all the way up... and that's even with the seat slid all the way up to the wheel when my iddy-biddy wife drives the truck! Having the hole in the leather and those steel pins sticking out is not very attractive at all, though.
The project as described above is still conceptual in my mind, and I keep mulling it over trying to see if I can come up with a better and simpler approach, but so far, the customized pipe cap is the best thing I've come up with.
The other good thing about doing the pvc work is that these "caps" are not in a position to receive contact with hardly anything, so I really don't think I would have to worry about chipped paint over time, either.
One thing you should keep in mind is if you value the rear audio controls, switching to the 08 console will do away with them. If you don't care, well then there shouldn't be any problem.
Thanks, aortiz.... I've thought about that, and will also be planning to re-install those controls in the back of the '08 unit, along with a back that has the cup holders.

I'm interested to see how that looks when it's done.
Do you have a console already? Instead of installing a back that has the cup holders already couldn't you just buy a console that already has them?
Yes, you can. In fact, you can get a single piece of any individual piece on the unit. When these things first hit the streets from the custom shops, you could only get one from Ford by purchasing all the individual components, and the total price for all the pieces was over $1200. I think now you can actually purchase a console complete from Ford, but it's in the $350 range IIRC, which is still much more than eBay prices.
I priced the back piece, and I think it's either $45 or $65 for the version that has the built in preformed cup holders. You can rarely see one on eBay with the rear cup holders in place, but I've only seen it once or twice in the past year. I'll tell you the truth, too, taking the pieces apart is tedious and tough, but it's possible.
I'm still working on a flat black overlay paint on my chromed cup holder rings for the front cupholders, which, to me, looks a lot better tahn the chrome version. I screwed up the paint teh first time and got it sort of blobbed up, and have been sanding and re-spraying to get the smooth finish back before the final topcoat. It's almost finished, but I will spend weeks forgetting completely about it except when I get in the truck in the mornings, so I expect it will probably be another month before I finish it up completely for pics. Getting that chrome piece off was a REAL booger, too, but I managed it without breaking a single plastic tab by being very patient and careful with two flat-tipped screwdrivers.
