Brake Controller

Thinking about adding abrake controller to my 2002 SD, Any suggestions as to which one to purchase and where? Also, can it be done do-it-yourself?

IMO the Prodigy is the best aftermarket controller out there.
The trailer brake controller is a very easy install, if you already have a trailer tow pkg. It's pretty much plug and play. My knowledge of the Prodigy comes from 2004.
I have used the Ford factory controller for the past 5 yrs., and it hands down is the best controller around.

Check out the various sponsors here in FTE for a controller. Like wiingnut, I have a factory unit and love it. My son just recently installed a Prodigy in his Chevy dually without to much difficulty. And yes I have tried to convert him but he is a diehard Chevyman.

x3 on the Prodigy. For the money you can't buy a better control. No more skidding up to red lights, or not enough brake on the highway. If you have factory tow pkg it is an easy install with the included wire harness. Even if you don't, I think you can get a harness from Tekonsha (sp?)

According to a lot of people on the RV boards "Brakesmart" is the best. From what I've read it has some features the Prodigy doesn't have. If I remember right one of those features is that it will automatically adjust the gain based on the tow weight. I've never used either unit, but both are well regarded in the RV world. I've got an '06 with Tow Command and it's the best I've ever used.

Had a 05 SD with Tow Command and factory brake controller. It's the best I've ever used. Got rid of the 05 6.0L SD to avoid big expenses down the road when warranty expires and bought an F150. I had to go back to aftermarket brake controller. I bought the Prodigy and it's the best aftermarket controller I've ever used. I had trailer tow on the F150, so I bought the harness adapter that was specific for my 06 F150 for $12 and it was a plug and play. The install took 20 minutes.

I have a Tekonsha Sentenial Brake controler out in the garage. It is already wired to the Ford factory plug...all you would have to do is plug it into the factory pre-wired harness under the dash. I also have the instructions on how to mount and use. I have not used this controller myself, I bought it from a guy on another Ford site to keep as a spare.
You are welcome to it, all I ask is that you cover the postage to get it to you.
Let me know if you are interested.

Brake smart is definitly the bset. It taps into your master cyl. so it brakes according to how much you press the brakes.

I have a tekonsha voyager. Works well once you figure out that the "level" **** is reverse of what they state in the operators manual.
